This is the headline from an article on the UN site from 10/08/24 about 2 bills moving through the Knesset that would prohibit UNRWA from any activity in Israel and prohibit the Israeli government from having any contact with them. It passed it's first reading in a committee on Monday. Since Israel maintains a blockade on Gaza and control of the West Bank it would be virtually impossible for UNRWA to get food and medicine to the Palestinians. So will it become law? There is a huge appetite for it on the right in Israel. Especially by the government ministers who months ago called for cutting off food and medicine.
But this is the result of 75+ years of the UN relying upon "words of concern or condemnation" while basically standing by, in any forceful sense, and allowing Israel to do as it pleases in the Occupied Territories. These Territories by international law are still legally under UN control but the Security Council vetoes have always turned away any enforcement or repercussions for refusal to abide by Security Council Resolutions and General Assembly Resolutions.
So here we are with the IDF blatantly attacking UN troops and breaking down UN camp perimeter walls. So did "words of concern and warnings" stop or alter any actions so far? Not really. Should we think they will in the future? The stuff of tooth fairies to believe that. Should we believe that Israel is going to mount a massive effort to feed and provide medical care for the Palestinians? Even the tooth fairies don't believe that one.
