Jeg liker en gutt.
That is how one says "I like a boy." in Norwegian. Neat. I am one of those Duolingo users who is trying out different languages, while trying to improve upon ones I already speak. I started Norwegian, Danish and Swedish, all at the same time (yeah, I am one of those people). The phrase came up in one of my lessons. Frankly, not that big of a deal, but I decided to hit "discuss" to see if there were any comments of interest...there were. A simple statement like that, which makes no pronouncement of sexuality or sexual orientation and people lost their shit! It shows how ingrained homophobia is in our world. The funny thing is that "Jeg liker en jente" which is "I like a girl" had almost no push back.
Of course, I won't even go into the disgusting threads in the French section when we are asked to translate "He loves a man." or "She loves the woman." It is so fucking sad that a language program is rife with bigotry and hate. BUT, I will say, it is refreshing to see all types represented in the translations, including a story about a woman waiting for her wife at the airport.
Just had to get that off my chest so I can close out that tab!
