BYU removed LGBTQ resource pamphlets from welcome bags for new students

Brigham Young University removed pamphlets with off-campus resources for LGBTQ students from welcome bags for incoming freshman in late August.

Created by RaYnbow Collective, a nonprofit that founder and BYU student Maddison Tenney says focuses on education and allyship for queer students, the pamphlets had information on weekly and monthly events available to LGBTQ students as well as lists of organizations in the area that could provide therapy, safe housing, mentorship and more. The RaYnbow Collective is not officially affiliated with the university.

Tenney, who is gay, said she wanted to create the pamphlets because she remembers the loneliness she felt as a freshman at the university, which is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the university in Provo, Utah, located about 45 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, students are restricted by university rules from dating or showing signs of affection toward members of the same sex. Violation of those rules puts students at risk of being unenrolled.

“I remember sitting in my white dorm room with these cement walls and breaking down,” Tenney said. “I didn’t know anyone who was like me, who wanted to be faithful and embrace the fullness of themselves.”

There are so many more sane and non misogynistic educational choices out there.

I've known several very smart grad students who rejected BYU simply because of their strict religious dogma and bigotry towards anyone not white, male, and christian.

BYU pays lip service to anti-discrimination trends, misogynistic reforms, and equality measures, but in reality they are just another christofascist institution perpetuating the institutional bigotry and misogyny inherent in mormanism in particular.

I've never understood why top flight minority and female athletes attend that place.

University of South Carolina women’s basketball cancels series with BYU after racial slur incident.

snip

The South Carolina women’s basketball team has canceled a scheduled two-game series with BYU in the wake of an alleged racist incident involving a BYU fan, USC announced on Friday.

“As a head coach, my job is to do what’s best for my players and staff,” South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley said in a news release. “The incident at BYU has led me to reevaluate our home-and-home, and I don’t feel that this is the right time for us to engage in this series.”

The incident Staley referenced occurred on Aug. 26 when Duke volleyball player Rachel Richardson’s family alleged she was repeatedly called a racial slur by a fan during a contest at BYU, according to the (Raleigh) News & Observer. snip

*******
BYU allowed the obscene harassment to continue throughout the match. What happened isn't an LGBTQ issue, but it is bigotry, and I think schools will call out BYU.

It might be time for someone to make a movie about the Salamander Letters.

Frankly I can't fathom the recent resurgence of homophobia except from these RW politicians pandering to the most radical evangelicals. It seemed most major religious organizations were finally softening their stance on this until not long ago.
Pride parades most everywhere grew in size, had several denominations of churches with booths, outreach services etc.
LOL, I've always been spiritual, but wary of organized religions along with my whole family. Somr religions can't seem as redemptive without choosing groups to demonize.
I honestly thought exposure of the Westboro's idiocy did us some favors, a bit too late for myself however. Their crazies came after me personally, thanks to relatives of theirs in a relatively short term hometown. They encouraged murder of "fags" and provided legal counsel for the accused in those days. Not one shred of innocence among Fred nor his flock.
Dammit this shit disturbs me. I considered suicide precisely because of lack of knowledge, not nearly as common now thanks to popular entertainment including us now instead of the butt of tasteless jibes.
Fuck all this "return to duh good ol' days" crap: that were never good for anyone but the WASPH's.

No, Drumpf didn't invent bigotry, but he sure made it real popular again. And apparently after a few years of debating, they decided it's us they hate the worst.

You nailed it, though... There were never any "good ol' days" for anyone but white straight cisgender males.

Hey, BYU... If the moron shoe fits... wear it.

No doubt that any student who outs themselves or is outed will be expelled.

It seems like every damned time they promise to be more inclusive and less homophobic, they instead turn around and act even worse.. It's like the mor(m)on church is ran by Dan Cathy or something.

Well, you're real cute, BYU.... No, actually, you're not. Fuck Ute too, BYU.
