People are so cruel. Our good friend Erica is an amazing trans woman who didnt start living her life as a woman until her 50s. Erica is the most generous and talented person Ive ever met, truly one of the most kind hearted people Ive ever met. Shes also an amazingly talented artist.
Here in Grand Rapids MI, we have an event called Art Prize. It turns the downtown into one big art gallery. Erica is a literal genius painter and entered an oil painting into the competition. Her bio was the first time shed publicly announced her self as a woman. So much courage.
Well she was at her venue yesterday and had an awful experience. The local news was supposed to interview her but decided to feature her assistant who helped with some props. It was obvious why they didnt put her on TV. It was a story featuring her as an artist and the only shot they showed of her was from a distance.
And when she walked around downtown to view other entries she was met with so much bigotry. Not just stares and snickers, but people making rude comments every few minutes. What the hell is wrong with people? People are different, you learn in Kindergarten to respect everyone.
What Erica built up in her mind into a coming out party of sorts was ruined by bigotry and hatred. Today my wife and I are going to her venue to bring her flowers and support. She says shell never walk around downtown again but Im going to try to get her to walk around with me even if I have to hold her hand. Literally in tears at the cruelty the world is showing this truly gentle and generous soul.

This is my dear friend Erica Kuhl. The oil painting "In Bello" is beyond a work of genius. She makes hundreds of sketches and does hundreds of hours of research before putting a painting like this together. There's symbolism in every detail from everything from pop culture to art history. The painting is even laid out using the golden ratio.
If you want to register and vote for her painting, it can help with exposure.
We went to support her at her site yesterday and it was great to see the fellow artists at that location supporting her too, one was wearing a "Trans Power" T Shirt. Took her out to lunch and ice cream afterwards.

(10,403 posts)I've had the same experiences from people but mostly they get met with the middle finger from me. I'm so glad she has good friends like you and your wife to support her. Please show us some of her artwork! I'm dying to see it!

The jury prize. Means the art critics awarded it. $2500. Her piece is for sale for $25K, but its probably going to be bumped up to $75K after the weekend. Were so proud. 500+ 2D entries, 2nd place.
