Despite LGBTQ people being severely underrepresented in public office, a significant number of Republicans believe that it would be worse for any more to get elected to Congress.
Around one in three Republicans (34%) said that it would be a bad thing for more LGBTQ people to be elected to Congress, an Insider/Morning Consult poll found. Republican men were even more hostile to LGBTQ representation (40% said more would be a bad thing) than Republican women (29%) in the polls results.
Only 15% of Republicans said it would be a good thing for there to be more LGBTQ representation in Congress.
Democrats, on the other hand, were much more supportive of getting more LGBTQ people into Congress, with 59% saying it would be a good thing to have more and only 10% saying it would be a bad thing.

(26,727 posts)I am a boringly straight woman, but I've had gay and lesbian friends and relatives forever. I'm even pleased to report that I know two trans people, one trans man, one trans woman, and I'm fascinated by them. Honestly, we need to have more diversity in Congress.
Oh, and I've been saying for some years now, that all new Supreme Court Justices need to be women, and then we need to have an all female Court as long as we had an all male Court.

(18,675 posts)Because, after all, these ARE Republicans we're talking about!
The male/female disparity isn't surprising, either. The kind of men who get all worked up about anything to do with LGBTQ issues (especially those who harbor a strong dislike of gay men), are heavily represented in the GOP. These are the guys who are like, "How dare those *homophobic slurs* defy the rules of toxic masculinity to act like anything other than a 'REAL MAN' (as I define that)?" and then do their best to promote discriminatory laws (or make those laws if they're in Congress or a state legislature). So, yeah, that's how I'd expect those jerkfaces to respond.
It sucks, but then Republicans suck, so it's right in character.
