Related: About this forumIsrael has been an LGBTQ haven in the Middle East. Its new government could change that.
The minister holding the countrys purse strings calls himself a proud homophobe. Another minister says Pride parades are vulgar, while a deputy minister who wants to cancel them was just given power over some aspects of what schoolchildren are taught. And then there are the lawmakers who want doctors to be able to decline medical care to LGBTQ people.
These are all members of the new Israeli government helmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and their extreme anti-LGBTQ sentiment has unnerved LGBTQ Israelis and their allies at home and overseas.
The politicians positions are not new, but their positions of power and leverage within the government are. Plus, the new governments push toward a judicial overhaul that would give lawmakers the right to overrule the Supreme Court adds vulnerability to legal precedents that have protected LGBTQ Israelis.
The majority of the gay community in Israel is feeling very unsafe, said Hila Peer, the chairwoman of Aguda-The Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel. You have at least an intention to legislate laws that are dire for the gay community.

This is distressing and not good news. However, I feel the new coalition may collapse; I hope it does! Israel still has a way to go on some GLBT issues, but it far surpasses other nations, especially in the Middle East and most of Asia. Frankly, it is what some of us are experiencing here, a fear shit is going to hit the fan in a big, bad way.

(2,809 posts)Some dipshit and/or shits in the top .01 percenters has been funding the crap out of RW authoritarian wackjobs worldwide ever since the Occupy movement made them sweat.
Anyone else notice how not only wildly break-neck speed, worldwide and with vicious ferocity Occupy got the smackdown and waaaaay over the top media discouragement?
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole photo of the guy pooping next to the police car scandal wasn't staged.
Methinks the number of mini-Hitlers we're seeing gaining power likely isn't nearly as "grassroots" as it appears.
