Anti-transgender hate crimes spike, leading to calls for a public health emergency

Anti-transgender hate crimes spike, leading to calls for a public health emergency
An Advocate data analysis found that in Los Angeles County and across the country, hate crimes against transgender people are reaching historic highs.

For decades, transgender Americans have lived under a constant threat of violence. Whether at their homes, places of work or in public, there seemingly is nowhere out of reach from hate.

In the last 20 years, hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people of all types have risen at historic rates across the country. And since 2016, Los Angeles -- the nation's second-biggest city has seen a startling rise in violence motivated by hate against its transgender residents, though it is ranked as one of most friendly to queer and trans people in the U.S.

The Advocate compiled data from the years 2003-2022. A primary source was the LA County Commission on Human Relations (LACCHR), which has tracked hate crime data in the area for 25 years.

In 2022, there were 44 recorded anti-transgender hate crimes in the county, the highest number ever on record and a 20-year high. Seventy-two percent of those crimes were violent, also reaching a two-decade high since 2003.

I think some are natural haters and they pile onto the latest hate fad. We've seen how it shifts from one group to the next. It's horrific.

And it's always the relatively powerless people who can't effectively fight back. Now we have legislatures passing laws that marginalize LGBTQ people, which legitimizes discrimination against them, which in turn gives the haters permission to harm them. Members of racial/ethnic minorities are still victimized but they have more legal and numerical clout than they used to, so the mean people had to find an even less powerful group to pick on. People can really suck sometimes.

The Republicons have been at it again, and again, with their bathroom bills, and other anti trans legislation, requiring teachers to notify parents if a student changes their pronouns, or name in school.. The are deliberately creating a pariah group. NC's super majority. Super majorities allow them to pass mean spirited, castigating, punitive bills that become law, giving others a right to discriminate, by overriding the Governors veto.

... are raging, narrow-minded bigots, and they didn't get it from their mother or me, that's for sure.
Not long ago, I had to shut the older one up with this:

Do you know why men have nipples? Because every human being that has ever walked the Earth was – and is – female from the moment of conception and well into gestation. The Y chromosome begins to make its presence known at around 7 weeks. Now, every change a fetus experiences can happen at differing intervals, and at infinitely variable rates, and the same holds true for the brain. which means that, yeah, children are literally born gay every day. It is not a choice. Bigots deny it because they need for it to be a choice so they can condemn those children for making the wrong choice.

So his red-faced response was, "I don't believe that."

I said, science doesn't care whether or not you believe it, J. It'll just go on being true and leave you wallowing in your own little cesspool of malice and ignorance. But I said it gently, and with a smile.

Hang in there, Vercetti!
