Trans Teen in Minnesota Has a Broken Jaw After Alleged Attack Outside a School Bathroom
Police in Minnetonka, Minnesota are investigating the alleged assault on Cobalt Sovereign, 17, as a possible hate crime.

The following contains graphic descriptions of violence against a transgender child.

A 17-year-old transgender student in Minnesota was hospitalized last week after she was attacked by a classmate in her school’s bathroom. The violent assault was caught on video.

Cobalt Sovereign, a junior at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, MN, told NBC affiliate KARE that she was trying to use the bathroom on May 30 when another student began berating her with slurs. Sovereign, who uses she/they pronouns, said that although her school does have gender-neutral facilities, they are usually occupied or too far away, so she used a bathroom designated for boys even though it made her “incredibly uncomfortable” to do so.

“In the bathroom, he [the other student] had looked over the stall directly where I was attempting to use the bathroom, and that is where he initially called me a faggot in the first place," Sovereign told KARE — a slur the other student allegedly repeated several times. When Sovereign left the bathroom, she was surrounded by a total of three students, one of whom then attacked her without provocation. Sovereign’s mother said police later showed her a video of the attack, confirming her child’s story.

“I was hit in the jaw, and at the time one of my teeth exploded, pieces in my mouth," Sovereign said. "My jaw was broken in two places [...] molar, just shattered.” Doctors said Sovereign may also have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during the attack. They were hospitalized for two days afterwards, and said they later had nightmares about the attack. According to her family, Sovereign is recovering, but cannot yet eat solid foods.

She did what the bigots say they want and SHE was assaulted and had HER jaw broke for it.

It’s disgusting but not particularly surprising it still goes on today. I’d guess there are numerous fights everyday throughout the schools all over the country.

Sexual assaults in school have happened…not particularly surprising

School shootings have happened…not particularly surprising.

Strong arm robberies in schools have happened…not particularly surprising.

Bullying in general in schools has happened (to the point of suicide)…not particularly surprising.

Man…if only people would listen to themselves first…but not particularly surprising…at all.

8. A zero tolerance policy of bullying, bigotry
Fri Jun 7, 2024, 08:27 AM

... and physically bashing them might be a good place to start to make public schools a safer place for all students. Particularly the students of minority group status.

Breaking someone's jaw in two places is not a love tap it is a violent criminal assault to teach this kid they addressed as a trans/fag a lesson and punish her for being different.

This is a crime perpetrated upon the basis of vehement hatred and this group of attackers took it upon themselves to pulverize and bash the token of their hatred.

The prosecution of this crime should be enhanced with Hate Crime status to add to the severity of this abhorrent behavior.

Those who proudly attacked her should be immediately arrested and formerly charged for this crime.

Charging them will quickly get the message out to the community that this violent behavior is specifically and particularly verboten. You will suffer the consequences if you launch or participate in such a injuriously violent attack.

This horrific assault is eons beyond mearly a slap on the back of the hand - then quickly moveing on. It must be dealt with rapidly and sternly to curtail this type of barbaricly shity behavior.

But as teenagers, some don’t abide by the rules. Fights break out. This will end up in the juvenile courts.

12. I don't recall any fights in my high school

We had nearly 1,500 in our school with three grades. Between classes there were teachers and vice principal monitoring to prevent problems. I think most problems if any were outside along the walls with smoking.

Kids never messed with me. I had a congenital deformity of the ears and used a body aid bone conduction type of hearing aid which required a band over my head.

If I'm surrounded by three people, I'm either going out fighting for my life or getting severely beaten. I'll take fighting back. This poor child had to endure what the GOP and their nazi followers have created for us.

11. School didn't call an ambulance and didn't call the police

From the them.us article:
“The school did not call an ambulance. The school did not file a police report. Students and families were not notified. It wasn’t until our rally was announced yesterday that authorities began to move,” Finke wrote on Instagram, comparing the two attacks and officials’ responses. “Cobalt lived. Thank goddess. Nex did not. Please help us make sure there is no next time.”

The Minnetonka Police Department said in a statement to CNN that it is investigating an attack that day at Hopkins High School as “a possible hate crime,” but said “details remain limited as the case was reported to police after school had ended for the day.” Hopkins High School said it is investigating “an act of violence” that “involved a student who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.”

“We will address any issues that compromise the safety and inclusivity of our school environment,” the school told CNN in a statement. “We support and stand by any group that is marginalized, including our LGBTQ+ scholars and staff.”

Minnetonka Police Chief Scott Boerboom tells CNN Sovereign’s mother reported the incident to the police department the day it happened and he was not made aware of it until the following Monday.
