MY PREGNANCY VS. THE STATE OF TEXAS

“The loss of my daughter was inevitable. What happened next was not.”
BY AMANDA ZURAWSKI
I was 18 weeks pregnant when I knew something was wrong. My body was leaking thick and yellowish discharge, and my pelvis felt what I could only describe as abnormally “open.”

A shockingly brief examination later, I was diagnosed with an “incompetent cervix”—a condition in which the cervix prematurely dilates, usually during the second trimester of pregnancy and often leading to premature birth.

It was evident from the moment my doctor saw my bulging amniotic sac that this was not a question of if I would lose my baby—the baby my husband and I wanted so badly and had worked for 18 months with the help of science and medicine to conceive. It was a question of when.

If we had conceived the previous year when we began our journey with infertility, or if we lived in a different state, my healthcare team would have been able to treat me immediately and end my doomed pregnancy as soon as possible, without risk to my life or my health. I wouldn’t have had to wait in anguish for days for the inescapable ill fate that awaited. But this was August 23, 2022, in the state of Texas, where abortion is illegal unless the pregnant person is facing “a life-threatening physical condition aggravated by, caused by, or arising from a pregnancy.” Somehow, any medical help to make the horrific inevitability of losing my beloved child 22 weeks early less difficult qualified as an illegal abortion.

to placate (mostly) male legislators making these decisions instead of medical professionals is deplorable. I'm glad Amanda survived, but many women will not.

Thanks for adding yet another story for our file, pants.

the excessive medical expense this family is and will face because of the State’s actions. In addition there is mental and ongoing physical harm this has caused to the woman.

Money is all that talks in this country. The State must be made to pay.

These stories MUST be front-page news. With photos, names and faces. I actually had some asswipe on FB tell me repeatedly that “no one has been harmed by these laws.” Swear we live on two different planets. Ours is reality-based.

I'm trying to find some words to express how I feel about this, but all my thoughts keep dissolving in strings of profanity so harsh that I can't even OMGWTFWTFWTFFFFFFFF.

This is the third horror story like this that I’ve read in as many days, and OMGOMFGWTFJFC how many more of these are there going to be before this country comes to its motherfucking senses??!?!??

Curses on every single one of the GD SOBS who pass these stinking abortion ban laws that cause women to be put through hell just so politicians can brag about how they are "protecting the lives of the unborn." What a freaking farce. Risking women's lives unnecessarily to "protect the lives" of already doomed fetuses? Give me a freaking break!!!!!

GD every single one of the SOBS responsible for these nightmares straight to the fiery pits of hell. May they rot there forever.

This pregnancy is not life threatening, but has no chance of carrying a healthy baby to term? So what would happen if there were a Texas type ban nationwide and there could be no abortion? Would they wait until the woman is so sick that her life is considered to be in danger?

"I developed a raging fever and dangerously low blood pressure and was rushed to the ICU with sepsis. Tests found both my blood and my placenta teeming with bacteria that had multiplied, probably as a result of the wait. I would stay in the ICU for three more days as medical professionals battled to save my life.

Friends visited every night. Family flew in from across the country. I didn’t realize until nearly a month later that my doctors, nurses, and loved ones feared I was going to die."

That's exactly what they would do and what they are already doing in Texas and elsewhere. It's horrifying and unconscionable, and a nationwide ban would be much, much worse, because crap like this would be happening EVERYWHERE in the U.S. instead of just certain states.

My sister in law had an incompetent cervix and lost her baby at 4 months. She received the best of care with no physical danger.

I don't know the specifics of her treatment; I do know she became pregnant again and her doctors immediately sutured her cervix to prevent another miscarriage.

Sweet Emilee is 11. If my SIL had been treated the same way as this woman, she would not have her beautiful daughter. In fact, she might not have survived the miscarriage.

They are only pro-fetus, and when there's a choice to be made between a living, breathing woman and a dying, doomed fetus, they'll pick the fetus every time! They have to "protect the lives of the unborn," you see, at the cost of anything, everything, and anyone else that might be involved.

They'll allow a woman's life to be saved if a doctor can prove beyond a doubt that there is absolutely no fetal life inside her, but otherwise, forget about it!

Saving a woman's possible future fertility is even less important to them. Most of them probably believe that any woman who would have an abortion doesn't "deserve" to be a mother anyway.

"Even if the abortion was needed to save her life?" you ask. Ha! They don't believe that's even a thing that happens!

The "pro-life" label is a huge lie in general. If it wasn't deliberately coined to slander those who believe in choice, it might as well have been. After all, what's the opposite of "pro-life"? That's right, pro-death! Every time they refer to themselves that way, they're implying the rest of us are "pro-death"! That's why I absolutely refuse to use that label. They're pro-fetus, pro-making women staying pregnant, and anti-choice.

Pro-life? Not by a long shot!
