I encourage folks here to use their jury blacklists to the fullest extent

many of you know more about this than me, but if you don't keep in mind:

if you're a feminist or other type of liberal or civil rights activist, in a way you're targeted by a minority here, but a minority that is very effective in getting on juries.

just a hint of how this all can play out...if someone posts something offensive to feminists, when the feminists and their allies respond in the thread, all of these people will not be called to serve on juries about any post in that thread.

who is left? those who aren't offended and don't post in it, those who are "meh" about it or those who hang back and wait to serve on juries (get a life right?).

but you see it time and time again.

so talk to each other and update your jury blacklist. i think it makes a difference because those who oppose feminists don't have the numbers here that you do.

thanks for listening.

But that is my strategy. A feeling about who is spiteful and plays favorites - and a few who just creep me out.

You have been here longer than I have. Do only star members serve on jury? As of late, I think I may need one. TIA

I also know the people on my list - I can't be neutral if I end up on one of their juries.

14. No, Star membership is not required, but it helps
Fri Jul 11, 2014, 03:00 PM
Jul 2014

The official explanation includes this passage:

After checking to see if a potential Juror is not excluded, the software then does a virtual "dice roll" against the member's chance of serving. Every member's chance of serving is represented as a percentage and is publicly displayed on their Profile page. A member's maximum possible chance of serving is 100%, and their lowest possible chance of serving is 0%.

Things that increase a member's chance of serving:

Increase 1 percentage point for each 100 posts (up to 20 percentage points max = 2,000 posts)
Increase 1 percentage point for each 10 days of membership (up to 20 percentage points max = 200 days)
Increase 1 percentage point for each post in the last 90 days (up to 20 percentage points max = 20 posts)
Increase 40 percentage points for Star Membership
Things that decrease a member's chance of serving:

Decrease 20 percentage points for each hidden post in last 90 days

Therefore, if you aren't a Star member, the chance that, when you're randomly picked, you'll actually be invited to serve, maxes out at 60%.

4. Good advice, but not useful only to supporters of Feminist principles.

Let's face it, there is a lot of animosity among members and I'm sure there are serial alerters and even people who work with others to target individuals that they may not like.

It's a plain fact.

And your advice is good advice.

Thanks.

6. You appear to assume that all malicious alerting is done by opponents of feminism.
Thu Jul 10, 2014, 10:33 PM
Jul 2014

My guess is that there is absolutely no collection of DUers with a particular viewpoint that is completely free of alert abusers.

Of course, that only reinforces your advice about using the jury blacklist.

9. You discussed the targeting issue but in very limited terms
Fri Jul 11, 2014, 02:24 AM

You referred to problems that can face a DUer who is "a feminist or other type of liberal or civil rights activist...."

I was simply expanding on your comment. I believe that the type of alert abuse you described also affects other DUers, and is in fact sometimes employed by people who would vehemently proclaim themselves to be feminists or other type of liberal or civil rights activists. If you agree with me, I'm glad, but that wasn't obvious from your OP.

I certainly agree with you in rejecting all-or-nothing thinking, at least when it comes to civility on DU. More than once, I've been called to jury a post that I thought was clearly wrong but not hideable; then when I read the alerter's explanation, the stupidity of the alert has astounded me. Thus, I know first-hand that there are people who agree with me about a particular issue but who can still abusively alert about that issue.

11. Jim Lane, a note from a host of this group:
Fri Jul 11, 2014, 08:50 AM
Jul 2014

Please note that this is a thread within a feminist group, thus making a statement about using your jury blacklist to avoid those who may alert maliciously on that basis is appropriate and within the SOP.

Arguing here that the poster is just imagining it is not.

Thanks,
Gormy Cuss

I wasn't arguing that the OP was just imagining alert abuse. To the contrary, I opined "that there is absolutely no collection of DUers with a particular viewpoint that is completely free of alert abusers."

My only difference with the OP is that the OP mentioned only one aspect of alert abuse, and I think the problem is broader than what the OP said. That's why I said to CreekDog that my addition "only reinforces your advice about using the jury blacklist."

And zero hides on DU 3.

I choose my jury blacklist very carefully; it is comprised almost entirely of conservative Third Way or Republican trolls. Ther conservatives are the only ones here at DU who will result to total subjectiviity and underhanded tactics in order to alert and hide posts, and are by far the most likely to have sock puppets.

I review my jury blacklist frequently to eliminate the conservatives who have been tombstoned.

Oh, yeah, on edit: Check how often the posters on your jury blacklist post. If they rarely post, it may be that they don't spend much time here, and you may want to consider replacing an infrequent poster on your jury blacklist with a different "suspect" who posts every day or almost every day.

The more conservative the poster, the more probable they will try to cause you harm.
