LGBT vs. Feminists (new rule proposed - and why I think this is a non issue that should die now)

Last edited Tue Feb 14, 2012, 03:14 PM - Edit history (1)

I think we all hashed out the nature of iverglas's being blocked and why she was unblocked.

That discussion went off the rails and was once more being used to fight the IMAGINARY battle of which identity is more important, LGBT or Feminist.

I would like to propose a new rule.

Nobody gets to bring up which thing should be paramount. IF and ONLY if an issue arises in which that distinction is somehow meaningful, will that particular discussion be acceptable.

Please let me know your thoughts about this proposed rule.

Rehashing old battles (and worse, misconceptions of what those old battles were even about) is not helping anything IMO.

I've been a feminist my entire adult female life. This entire fiasco of putting up these walls between women, is not feminism.

I hope this rule lasts and I will follow it.

And as an aside to seabeyond, I was composing a reply to you when redqueen locked the other thread. No need to rehash, just wanted to tell you that I agree that all parties need to be held to the same standard of civil discourse.

I'm all for locking threads that become distractions from the real purpose of the group.
I just took a little bit too long to compose my reply to seabeyond.

It wasn't us who tried to make an issue out of this, and we were the ones who could not get answers to what the issue might be in any event.

It is not an issue. Suits me.

I'm not taking any sides here. I don't think anyone should be required to swear an allegiance to be loyal to feminist causes first or anything else first.

Whatever people's priorities are, as long as they're not disrupting this group I don't care what importance they place on energy issues or environmental issues or national security issues or whatever.

The subject line contains the words "many of us". The "us" in that case will be posters in this group's forum.

The "us" in the body of the post obviously refers to the "many of us" in the subject line.

Please don't criticise my grammar, or whatever it is you were doing there.

Many of us said X.
We who said X ...

I trust that is clearer now.

That being the case, it is rather disingenuous of you now to claim that you are part of any group that didn't try to make an issue of it.

I'm glad you no longer consider it an issue. Thanks for your feedback.

I never considered it an issue.

I and a number of other group members were told it was an issue by several people who very flatly refused to tell us the nature of their issue, despite repeated requests by a number of people.

I did not "try to make an issue" of anything, and you may want to reread the threads in issue if you want to assert that, for some kind of substantiation.

Certain people posted here and told us their position. They declined to explain what the issue was that led to their stating that position.

If they "no longer consider it an issue", whatever it was, that's lovely and I'm all for moving ahead on that basis.

In any case, I'll be glad to see the discussion end unless and until it comes up organically as a result of an actual incident in which such ranking of loyalty is somehow germane to the issue at hand.

The few members who have personal conflicts need to make an effort to back away and exercise their right to use the ignore button.

I am all in favor of the hosts in this group shutting down threads where this conflict is resurrected.

Let this be an end...Let there be peace

And if and when we get around to the host discussion again, I'd like to once again say I think having additional host that is a female LGBT member would be a great idea. Would make for a well rounded host team.

There is only one group that ever gets satisfaction when leftists of any stripe fight, and that is the right wing that is ready to pick at our corpses. Let's not forget that while we may have sibling quarrels, we are all of the same family in the end.

I don't know if we all have the exact same goals, but the overarching desire of everyone here is to see a more just and egalitarian society in which women are treated as human beings and not 'othered' as they are now.
