Tonight I was a Victim of Crime for what I believe is now the 11th time, and the 5th where it's been against my person. Tonight's thing wasn't violent for a change, and my property (and the suspect) was recovered within an hour - mad props to Mountain View PD - but it made me wonder Why Me?
And then, as I went over each event - 3 muggings, 1 attempted kidnaping/rape and this Grand Theft - I was wearing a dress or a skirt each time. I don't wear dresses or skirts very often, either. I wonder if there's a connection or just very weird coincidence ... but I'm wearing jeans and engineer boots tomorrow.
On edit: I'm a woman and can't pass for anything else if I tried; the 'dress like a girl' is something my friends and husband rib me with

Since I've moved to CA, the crime is waaaay down: tonight's thing and my car war broken into 9 or 10 years ago but knock wood, that's it since I moved here 14 years ago

(992 posts)Location, Location, Location? I'm male so my perspective may be distorted but My wife and I have been married 41-1/2 years and the only crime either of us experienced was an attempted break in at the house. Came home and found a foot print on the door where someone attempted to kick in the door. My neighbor has had his vehicles broken into twice but he use to not lock them and we do. Prevention saved us.
We live in a subdivision of SFD on 1/2 acer lots and after the attempted break in have a security system. We are both very careful when we go out and now that we are both >60 seldom go out after dark.

(21,691 posts)Because Kansas City is a crime-ridden city and I walked and/or took the bus nearly everywhere I went nearly the entire time I lived there. Only got physically attacked when I was wearing typical female attire, though (that didn't matter when my cat was being broken into, having the plate stolen, or the whole car stolen, or my place being broken into).
Where I was Grand Thefted (there wasn't enough contact to really call it an attack) last night was in a very low-crime, high SES area.

(10,039 posts)I can't fake being a guy because of my voice. I've heard from someone that I look like the female version of David Bowie when I'm too skinny though. (Nice compliment eh?)
Otherwise, we hit the jackpot. We live around yuppies. The area itself is way too public to even mug someone.

(21,691 posts)They don't talk to you when they rob/mug/otherwise assault you. They look at you, and with my built - full on top, narrow waist, full hips - there's no mistaking my gender. Plus I'm 5'3". I've always been somewhat envious of those who are more androgynous, who can disguise themselves if they wish.
Oh, and I was at a coffeeshop when I was robbed yesterday. In public, in front of other people, in the city where Google is headquartered. Never say never.

(21,691 posts)Next to Butter Sugar Flour. Lots of Fresh Choices, too; one in the Cala Center. Vegan/vegetarian but not Chinese.
There was a murder near my old place about 5 years ago in old MTV - far from Central - but that was a love triangle gone gangsta. My incident will probably be in the Voice Here is still better than KC but I'm still looking forward to my house in Los Gatos finally being done.
