'Vaccinated people are dying from the Delta variant, but in small numbers and almost all are over 50, UK data shows,' Business Insider, June 28, 2021. - Ed.
- The UK has recorded a total of 117 deaths in people with the Delta coronavirus variant.
- 50 of them were among people who'd taken 2 doses of vaccines - a reminder the shots are imperfect.
- No fully-vaccinated people under 50 died, and the overall death rate was 0.13%.
- Of those who were fully vaccinated who caught the Delta variant, 50 died, according to data from Public Health England published on Friday.
The figure represents almost half of the total 117 deaths associated with the variant in the UK, where Delta now represents the overwhelming majority of cases. But experts argue that this does not undermine what we know about the efficacy of the vaccines, given that the deaths come from age groups at higher risk, and represent a tiny proportion of the 92,029 Delta cases analyzed.
Eight people under the age of 50 died after getting the Delta variant, the data shows. None were fully vaccinated, while two had received one dose of the vaccine. 92,029 cases of Delta have been confirmed by Public Health England as of June 21, of which 117 ended in death. 109 of the cases were in those over the age of 50. UK officials did not give a more detailed age breakdown, but coronavirus deaths disproportionately affect the very elderly.
"Does this mean the vaccines are ineffective? Far from it," statisticians David Spiegelhalter and Anthony Masters said.."It's what we would expect from an effective but imperfect vaccine." The bulk of the UK's vaccination program has been made up of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines, 2 doses of these vaccines are highly protective against developing symptoms after catching the Delta variant: 88% for the Pfizer vaccine, and 60% for the AstraZeneca vaccine, according to earlier UK data. But the risk of dying from COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated depends on people's age...

(6,096 posts)isn't that death rate half of the previous versions? .1% vs .2%
scary though that half the deaths were in the vaxed cohort.

(6,096 posts)so this is seemingly an improvement, perhaps due to the vaccines working.
on edit I think my numbers are way off was it 2 per hundred?

(18,109 posts)So, about 0.000001% of fully vaccinated people have died from breakthrough infections of the Delta variant.

(35,924 posts)I would guess that most of the 50 deaths are aged 65 and over with average age at 80.

There are more variables than just age
appalachiablue
(42,804 posts)variables are important- chronic diseases and conditions, from asthma to cancer, along with more common conditions- diabetes, hi BP, obesity. Lifestyle and diet, etc.
It's known that natural immunity declines the older people get.

(3,600 posts)My state doesn't even appear to be tracking COVID cases amongst the fully or partially vaccinated. You'll probably only see anecdotal evidence of the impact of this strain in the counties with low vaccination rates to begin with.
People resisting getting vaccinated put the rest of us in danger. Either our health care network will get strained and exposed since people in rural areas are going to get transported into more suburban and urban areas where there are more hospitals or they are going to allow for the creation of new strains that may be more transmittable and/or have a higher mortality rate.

(113,118 posts)Among the remaining 8-9%, most will have mild cases of the disease. A vanishingly small number will have severe cases.
No vaccine is 100%. I don't develop measles antibodies to the MMR and I was a smallpox "non taker." It happens.
I hate articles like this one that bury the lede, that the vaccines offer outstanding protection to a vast majority of people, under a lot of crap about the tiny and unfortunate minority who got sick and the tinier minority of them who died. You know, "look what happens to people who get this vaccine! They get sick and DIE!" Clearly, this is not helpful and I wish they'd stop.
I'm pretty sure this vaccine is "taking." The first shot reminded me of just how ill I was in March 2020. That's a good thing, I don't want it again. I'll get that second shot.
