I hate this heat.

I'm in northern NJ, 20 miles from NYC. It's over 80 in my home.

Renting and no A/C. I use a fan.

I can fall asleep but when I wake up, I'm not rested or refreshed.

I know, I know: buy an A/C unit.

I just don't have the money for it nor for the extra money for the electric bill.

This isn't my first rodeo, but this year, the effects of the heat and the humidity are just extraordinary.

This year we looked into whole house AC & decided on a window unit instead. Even that has made a huge difference, especially when we get multiple days in a row over 90 or 100. But, if you can't afford one...

Keep a spritz bottle of cold water to spray yourself with in front of the fan or while lying down. You could also set the fan up behind an ice block sitting in a basin of some type. I saw that in a CSI episode, except the person's basin leaked & the water dripped onto the floor & ran to something electrical & the guy was electrocuted, LOL, so don't do that.

Good luck. We have another week & then some relief.

Life long New Englander and it is getting harder to take. I used to say it’s only for a few weeks, but I may have to break down and get a unit for upstairs next year. Got the heating season to think about next. 🙄

Cut into a solid wall, up next to the vaulted ceiling. Since the shell t was already built, there was no way to put in central air. Minimal walls, and we also have 3 ceiling fans. It works pretty well, considering there's no insulation under the metal roof.

This is in hot and humid south central KY, where the heat index is usually triple digits lately.

Have you checked into getting assistance for one installed and on the monthly bill? I think most states have a program.

7. My sister lives where it seldom gets really hot so she has her own solution. She puts frozen

bottles or bowls of ice in front of her fan.

You freeze an empty 4 pint or 1 litre plastic bottle, place it on a tray and cover with a damp cloth. You can also use a milk jug or a regular bowl of ice cubes. Use a wet towel over it to keep it all moist. Position this in front of the fan so the breeze is cooled from the iced bottle or bowl and your room will benefit from the cooler temperature.

She visited recently and stayed at a friends house that had no air con. It worked like a dream. Especially at night if you put the fan near your bed and the bowl or bottle of ice in from of it, it will cool you off most of the night.

8. Get a large t-shirt and sleep in it wet with the fan blowing on you.

I grew without AC.

It works.

The t-shirt needs to be larger then what you normally wear.
