They changed a lot from the book, needlessly I think. It was good, but I'd put it behind both the 30s version and the 79 remake.

IMO. Certainly the best with an antiwar message. It blows me away this this was made such a short time after the actual war. It didn’t have to be sensationalized to show the senseless destruction, horror and inhumanity. I would be interested in seeing the new one just for comparison

Edit: Went back and finished it today (4 days later). Gruesome. Horrific. And the juxtaposition of the food at the end--oh, the horror of day old croissants--was very effective.

It definitely is Oscar worthy.
