"Anatomy of a Fall" on Hulu

A man suffers a fatal fall from the third-story window of his chalet in the French Alps. Suspician falls on his wife (Sandra Hüller), a well-known author, and the case becomes a cause-célèbre that airs all the dirty laundry of their marriage before a gossip-hungry public and the couple's young, visually impaired son (Milo Machado-Graner).

I started watching this because I was curious as the picture, director and lead actress both earned Oscar nominations, while the screenplay won, which is unusual for a foreign-language film. I was hooked from the beginning by the solid performances, the copious but interesting dialogue, and, of course, the big question in this type of story: did the suspect really do it? What is most startling are the scenes in the courtroom, where several people at once have a conversation, arguing their positions, and entertaining various theories and motives. The French system is far more discursive than what we're used to. Hüller is powerful yet measured as the widow on trial and Machado-Graner is amazing as her son, a character who is sensitive and vulnerable but desperate to know the truth. I highly recommend this movie if you like foreign films, whodunits, and good dialogue.
