Addiction & Recovery
Related: About this forumI was a heavy drinker. Now I'm an ice cream junkie!
I look forward to a mug of ice cream every evening. A whole lot better than drinking every evening.

(15,359 posts)I quit drinking and smoking and gained a bunch of weight. I really quit drinking because I was quitting smoking. I might be able to trust myself to have a few some day, or I might get hammered and find myself walking over to get a pack of smokes. It's happened before.
For deserts, I've been going with stuff like vanilla yogurt and jello, and smallish portions. It beats hogging down a whole pint of Ben and Jerry's!

Sugar is a very powerful addictive substance..In some ways, more powerful than the so called, "addictive stuff".. And sugar is ..of course..totally legal.. Someone can get addicted to sugar at age 5. Just give that kid enough candy or ice cream or sugared cereal, and watch the results. That child will not know what is going on, but will often when any kind of hunger hits, just ask for the .."sugared stuff" instead of other foods..

This paragraph, today jumps out at me..
" If your brain is wired for addiction, vigilance is required with every potentially addictive substance or behavior. Even if youve only struggled with alcohol in the past, other mood-altering substances (even certain over-the-counter medications or those prescribed by a doctor for a legitimate medical condition) could awaken the sleeping tiger of addiction. This is why, even years into recovery, alcoholics who only use marijuana or try to drink in moderation end up relapsing. It also helps to explain why you can spot a 12-Step meeting by the number of people chain smoking outside or downing pots of coffee."

(222,214 posts)I was too - though my next addiction after getting sober was Reese's peanut butter cups. But I can also remember an early meeting where I compared notes with another beginner and we both said we kept track of the "flavor of the week" at the local ice cream chain here.

(38,726 posts)but without butter is ok. Let's pop it fresh, not in a bag like you get at the store. Add some salt, and other seasoning and ............BINGO.......... there it is..!!!!! (adding butter makes it better) ...
............did I say that????
