Addiction & Recovery
Related: About this forumRequest for prayers for my nephew, a fallen brother ...
My nephew Bobby is on life support and they are waiting for his dad to get to his side before they let him go.
He's not quite 30 and he he's been in rehab for alcoholism five or six times. He never blamed this on anyone, and he never stopped trying. He was a cheerful person and as a child was a bright and pleasant person to be around.
But the damage was done before he entered into this last rehab stay from where he was taken to hospital. He never gave up.
I am in shock and saddened and I did not know how badly he was damaged. He never let on about it to anyone including his dad. He never looked for sympathy.
He's not an example of failure, because he never gave up. We just can't give up. He never gave up on himself and his family never wrote him off.
Its a shock but I will remember his spirit and kindness and that he just never gave up.
Bear with me, please.
MFalls.

(62,905 posts)it was a surprising number. A very surprising number of family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers.
And how many who were alcoholics who could have gone and somehow lived.
Too many. Too damned many.
I am glad for those to broke through and stopped drinking, a fair number. There should have been more.

(10,551 posts)From what you wrote, it sounds like Bobby gave it a really good fight. Alcoholism is such a terrible disease. I am so sorry that he didn't get to have a lot more years.
30 is way too young.
Your DU family is always here for you.
For Bobby. May the end of his journey be peaceful.

(891 posts)who fell by the wayside, NEVER giving up but tapped on the shoulder by his Creator that his body has been battered enough & it's time to come Home, that's what we believe, in my family & nation that is, (African American Heinz 57 with a HEAVY dose of Native American Blood & that's just to begin with).
Please accept my most sincere & heartfelt condolences. Our family was in your family's situation when my cousin who had unacknowledged, untreated mental illness that was devastating. As a result, he got addicted to drugs & he fought to get sober for YEARS but unfortunately, like your nephew, he ended up dying in a park from what was characterised as a self inflicted gunshot wound after diving headfirst into a psychotic break. Though we don't believe he killed himself, (gun was in his left hand, even though he was right hand dominant & a car was heard & sighted driving away at a HIGH rate of speed IMMEDIATELY after the gunshot that was heard by neighbors to the park but I digress).
Like your sweet nephew, he was NOT a loser but a warrior who, due to his mental illness, was trying to fight an entire platoon with a slingshot & a nail clipper. They're both heroes & I'd like to believe that when your nephew returns to the place we all come from, my cousin, Kenneth'll be there to meet him, welcome him home & walk him to where he can get, what we call, a new chassis.
God bless & I promise to pray for him, his daddy, you & all the family & friends who love him so much. Take care of yourself, stay safe & healthy & know that someday, not too far in the future, you'll be able to smile whenever you hear his name.
