Addiction & Recovery
Related: About this forumMy alcoholic son tells me AA condones drinking for pain relief.
That sure as hell is news to me and I've been sober for 35 years. I am certain he is bullshitting me. He is using a herniated disk as an excuse for relapsing. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

(32,536 posts)Pain killers would be dangerous also for an alcoholic, of course.
But no, AA never says you can drink.

(30,288 posts)The doctor was amazed that the pain killers he prescribed kept me awake. I had to stop taking them and put up with the pain.
"AA never says you can drink" is what I remember. God Bless you Mr. Rosewater.

(20,987 posts)Sounds like first-growth, dyed-in-the-wool bullshit to me.
People with an active alcohol addiction can be remarkably creative with bullshit.

P.S. If you want to know "what AA says" you can order a Big Book from their online site. It's excellent reading.

(30,288 posts)I haven't been to a meeting since 1996, which is why I asked if there was some big change, although the bullshit smell was strong.

(14,595 posts)the only requirement for membership is the desire to stop drinking. Been in many, many meetings with guys wet as a dishrag with booze and that's OK so long as they behave and have that desire.
A couple of the very worst ones I sponsored were shaking so bad in my car I had to stop a buy them a half-pint to get them home or to a treatment center. But, those were very rare and unusual and done out of desperation and compassion. Most times, something sweet will stop minor shakes.
It is also AA tradition to defer to the medical profession's decisions regarding health issues. AA is no one's doctor. It's your son's choice what he takes for pain relief and AA has nothing to do with that.
In my 30 years, we've seen many, many false rumors about AA and we just disregard and trudge on.....

(1,031 posts)including pain - be it physical or emotional. Your son is just bs-ing you, I'm sorry to say. I have been going to AA for 20 years now, so I understand AA's program of recovery pretty well.
Does your son have an AA sponsor?

(1,031 posts)Have you considered going to alanon? They can be very helpful for family members of alcoholics. They won't tell you how to sober up your son, but they will support you in your own recovery from codependency. I am so sorry you are having to go through this.
