Cancer Support
Related: About this forumHello Y'all :)
I'm home now. (2 week hospital stay)
I'm using a feeding tube. I loss too much weight. I was in the danger zone for my body. I just wasn't thriving as well as the doctors hoped I would.
I'm now on a schedule of medicines and food that seems to be working. I'm up more and moving about more. I'm using a cane to get around but soon enough I'll be able to put it away.
I tire easily and I still sleep a lot.
So far - the cancer didn't spread and I am in remission. I have one more test - the definitive one - next month. Good news as it goes. I was happy.

(52,986 posts)the feeding tube, you can lose the ability to swallow.

My biggest issue was the nausea. I couldn't keep anything down. They discovered a problem with my throat and fixed it. No more gagging. No more being sick....but I was underweight by this point. That's why the tube. So I'm eating what I can and using the tube to aid in some weight gain.

(92,756 posts)My first real craving for food was pickles. I've eaten a jar already and want more. lol
I'm eating other things, of course, but I really wanted a pickle.

(16,571 posts)My wife just had a chemo port installed and she craved McDs french fries and a vanilla milkshake.
scared the hell out of me. She never drinks VANILLA SHAKES.
Hey, I made a 6 bean chili the other day and she had one and a half cups of it for dinner. I used
tomatos, cut green beans, chili beans, black beans, cannilloni beans, and two others I can't recall but
toss in a bit of onion, green sweet peppers, chili seasoning, and it's good. Tasty too.
Good luck on your recovery, there are a lot of us out there "that care"

(92,756 posts)I love homemade Chili! Your chili sounds good.
Thanks! Best of luck to your wife and to you.
I couldn't have done it without my husband's support.

(26,312 posts)Take advantage! Thats how your body shuts down to focus on healing you. Your amazing attitude has been there all along - let your body take over when it signals it is ready to get back to the job of healing.
Have you thought about cruising around some recipe sites? I don't like to cook, and had family here after my first surgery and they were chomping at the bit to cook since my appetite was non existent. My mom had me cruise through some site with a gazillion recipes and what caught my eye was panko fried brie with a cayenne pepper, vinegar, raspberry preserve, lemon juice "side kick". I lived on that combo for like a week after they found the gluten free panko and started cooking it up.
Oh, and I should mention - I craved dill pickles like crazy too. My Doc said it was likely being low on potassium (I think) and craving the sodium. Couldn't have cared less why - just glad that I did so much canning last summer and had a garage full of pickle spears.

(92,756 posts)My dogs were so happy to have me home they take naps when I do. One on either side.
Pickles are my friend! I'm on my 3rd jar with no end in sight. lol
That's what I've been doing....hitting the recipes. Whatever jumps out at me my husband makes sure I get. I'm cooking a little myself now but I get too tired when it's too involved.
I normally do not eat red meat but, Ruby, let me tell you - a plain hamburger is divine! No bread, no sauces....just meat. YUM!
I have several people on DU (you included) to thank for my attitude staying positive. I have been low, real low, and you guys have helped to bring me back up.
I can't thank y'all enough.
((((Ruby the Liberal)))) You've been a dear!!
Oh, got my hair cut today. Sort of a present to myself. A short bob. I love it! Took care on my unibrow I grew while in the hospital too.
It was a good day!

(26,312 posts)My second surgery is this coming week and I have been cooking up a storm in preparation. My ex-husband was a chef. One of those few times I "regret" (not really, but for 5 minutes) divorcing him. LOL
Made a huge batch of Ben's Chili (their recipe is on the web - I found it here on DU some time ago http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/22/bens-chili-bowl-bill-cosby_n_3795525.html ) and a huge batch of shepherd's pie. This weekend, I am making a buffalo chicken eggroll ordeal to add to the rest in the freezer.
Congrats on you for going to the salon! You are following the first rule of cancer - YOU COME FIRST.

Thanks for the recipe link. I love chili.
I haven't had this short since I was 4 years old. It's going to shock people.
