Cancer Support
Related: About this forumI am going to Madison on Monday
to see a surgeon. Apparently I can have a lobectomy, or similar surgery to remove the portion of the lung that has cancer and have the rest of the lung sewn back together. I will keep you informed.
I am still very scared about things. The mental health support for all of this has been nonexistent.
Thank God we discovered this early. I may still have a few years to live productively and accomplish a few things.

(8,460 posts)I have been to all of the major Madison hospitals. They are: University Hospital, Meriter, St. Mary's, the VA and UW Health (far east side). Meriter and St. Mary's are just a few blocks apart. There is a Meriter Hospital on Stoughton Road (east side) as well.
Most have eccentric parking and interior layouts.
If you are on University Avenue near the University, steady slow driving. Jaywalking is terrible. (Campus Drive is unofficially University Avenue, bypassing student housing). Definitely not my favorite for new visitors. Lots of students in central Madison.
Kwik Trip gasoline convenience stores are recommended. Sandwiches, juice, coffee in good fresh supply. Usually bathrooms are good. If not, alert the store. There are 2 on Fish Hatchery Road, one on each side of the road. (Forget all of the other competing gasoline stations, if not on University Avenue). Ask anyone for directions if unclear.
Midvale Boulevard is the safest way between University Avenue and The Beltline.
Park Street, not recommended if going to University Hospital.
Fish Hatchery Road is essentially a branch of Park Street.
From Rockford, take the Beltline West probably. If your visit is on the east side, exit Stoughton Road is likely. If your visit is Meriter or St. Mary's, exit Park Street or Fish Hatchery. I like Fish Hatchery myself a bit more. If your visit is UW Hospital or the VA, exit at Midvale Boulevard, go north all the way to University Avenue, turn right. Highland Avenue is U-shaped.
mail me any questions.
we are with you

(92,941 posts)It can be very confusing. All streets radiating from the capitol are one way for a few blocks out. I haven't been there for a long time but I lived there for a few years and was very familiar with University Hospital as a dear one was there for ten months.

(113,833 posts)call it a road trip. Glad you have this option.
had something similar done in1989. They found cancer in a portion of her lung and in some lymph nodes, so she had chemo too. She lived another 21 years. In my area, hospitals usually have cancer support teams to help the patients navigate their care and mental health services would be included. Sorry to hear about your cancer and your experience. Wishing you all the best 🕊🕊

(2,272 posts)You're right that it is a very good thing that you discovered the cancer early. They can work miracles these days, and you have all of us here at DU for support whenever you need virtual hugs!

(92,941 posts)Decades ago but still, I was fortunate to witness the fabulous medical professional environment first hand. There are med schools there and some really important findings have been discovered at UW. It's one of the better locations in the country to receive medical care if you have access to it.

(31,462 posts)No one is going to do that over the phone. I will have to wait until Monday. It is still possible that they cannot help me at all.
