Non diabetic peripheral neuropathy, shoulder pain and Alpha Lipoid Acid.
My friend that is a cardiologist recommended Alpha Lipoid Acid for my neuropathy. I took 600mg/day of the lipoid acid for a month or so and didn't notice much improvement, may be a little. A few weeks ago I doubled the doze and now have a very noticeable improvement in the neuropathy.
One big change has been in my chronic shoulder pain, less pain, better sleep and much better range of movement. Have not been able to find anything about using this supplement for joint pain.

(3,853 posts)A friend uses the supplement and has said that it has helped her pain. She's on a number of other medications so it's hard to gauge the effectiveness though. She's been taking 600 mg the recommended daily dose.

(33,999 posts)up to 2,500 mg/day. "May be" is the question. Article did list some of the negative effects and I'm watching out for those.

(33,999 posts)Alpha-lipoic acid has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in weight loss, treating diabetic nerve pain, healing wounds, lowering blood sugar, improving skin discoloration caused by vitiligo, and decreasing complications of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Alpha-lipoic acid may have been combined with other plants or extracts in a specific preparation to treat these conditions.
Alpha-lipoic acid has also been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, alcoholic liver problems, altitude sickness, heart-related nerve problems, HIV-related brain problems, or eye problems caused by diabetes. However, research has shown that alpha-lipoic acid may not be effective in treating these conditions.
Other uses not proven with research have included treating glaucoma, migraine headaches, high blood pressure, heart failure, dementia, carpal tunnel syndrome, leg pain caused by sciatic nerve damage or peripheral artery disease (PAD), anti-aging of the skin, and other conditions.

One time it felt like electric socks with a short in them... Very tingly. If I'm doing something I don't notice it but just sitting with my mind in neutral (I do that a lot) I notice it.
I'll check out the ALA and see if it helps... Tnx!!!

(1,851 posts)Not many years ago, I was experiencing severe pain in my lower abdomen. I went to ER at a new hospital when I could barely walk because of the pain. The ER doc diagnosed a UTI and gave me an antibiotic. I took it for almost three days, but was becoming very ill throughout a weekend and on Monday morning called my internist. I described my symptoms and pain and she directed me to go to ER immediately - and this time I went to my normal hospital. They ran a couple of tests and rushed me to emergency surgery for a burst appendix as I was already in sepsis. I could have died! I go to a natural health clinic for thyroid treatment (Hashimotos), and they have me on several supplements. My practitioner there told me it was likely the alpha lipoic acid I take saved me. It is therefore one supplement I will take for the rest of my life. From what I am reading here, it works for many things.
Side note: I demanded an investigation of my misdiagnosis at the first hospital. I only owed them $70, so money was not the issue. I just didnt want that doctor to be so neglectful of future patients. After writing the CEO, they looked into it, cancelled my bill and returned over $800 to my insurance company. I will obviously never go there again.

(3,611 posts)Alpha Lipoic Acid has also been shown to reverse liver cirrhosis, previously thought to be untreatable, so it must stimulate healing tissues and nerves both.

(9,574 posts)I started experiencing peripheral neuropathy suddenly last October and shortly thereafter was diagnosed with Cervical Mylopothy. Following spinal decompression surgery, the neuropathy remained and is very bad in my hands. The prescribed Gabapentin and then Pregabalin drug treatments haven't worked very well.
It would be a godsend to find something (legal) that relieves this shit. Lorazapam helps turn down the intensity of the neuropathic pain but my doctors have been reluctant to prescribe enough for more than a bedtime dose.
After seeing your post I did a little more research and decided to give the Alpha Lipoic Acid a try. I'm just starting it now at 800 mg a day and will see if that has any affect on me, if not I will increase it. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

(13,702 posts)It really makes a difference.
I had trouble getting the capsules down without heartburn until I started taking the pills with some bites of banana before, between the two pills, and after. With water too.
