UPDATE About six weeks ago my daughter (age 40) expressed interest in working

Last edited Sat Mar 16, 2013, 11:10 AM - Edit history (1)

out with me in the gym.

I got her started with some basic stuff involving free weights and machines.

Today we jogged/walked two miles, the first for either of us for several years. I ride bicycles regularly, and rediscovered that a bicycle does not prepare one for this other form of discomfort.

It will get better. We are entering our first 5K in a couple of weeks. On her birthday.

We are pumped!

UPDATE We did the 5K walk/run today. Our team had three generations: me, two daughters, one grandson, and a friend of the family. The older daughter bought matching t-shirts for the team.

I finished. We've agreed to keep the team together and do some more of these.

If the two of you are anything like the people I've run with, that first 5K will only make you more committed and determined! Good luck to both of you and let us know how it goes! Seriously. I love seeing/hearing/reading stories about how people progress.

MRI on shoulder about six months ago showed supraspinatus tendon completely severed, infraspinatus tendon nearly severed, and both of those two portions of the rotator cuff atrophied 90%, all due to an injury in the weight room about 12 years ago. AND, the right bicep long head tendon nearly severed, plus spurs in the shoulder joint.

Orthopedic surgeon expressed surprise I could even lift my arm.

This time last year I was working on bench press with a bare bar (45 lbs), all I could do due to pain. Today I bench pressed 175 six reps.

There is no hope for the torn muscles "window of opportunity for repair closed about 10 years ago", so I manage the pain with OTC stuff (arthritis strength stuff), various ointments, and a heating pad. Surgery could clean up the joint, but no guarantee the pain would go away.

Oh, and the guy who spotted for me today benched 185, but he's more experienced than I am. He's 80, and I am still a youthful 70.
