Related: About this forumSensory deprivation floatation tank experience?
A friend is trying to talk me into doing this with him, and it SOUNDS beneficial but I have a strong feeling I'll hate it. Anyone tried this, and what did you think?

(6,934 posts)To be clear, it's not for everyone. Ms. CincyDem absolutely HATES it (almost as much as I love it).
First - maker sure there's no shaving going on for a few days before...that floatation level of salt...eww weeee, that'll get your attention.
Get in, turn out the lights, pull the top down and float. After about 10 minutes, when the humidity in the tank comes to equilibrium, you'll stop feeling the moisture evaporate from your skin and, at that moment, it goes full float. You can't feel the water line anymore (assuming they've done a good job at hitting body temp - in my experiences with several locations, they usually are).
And, just as an aside, leave the swimsuit on the towel rack...makes a real difference in the float feel.
Just stay chill. some of the places have a set up for music. One I used has a connection plug for your music or you can use their canned stuff.
Enjoy.

"Respected scientist and psychology professor Edward Jessup (William Hurt) decides to combine his experiments in sensory deprivation tanks with powerful hallucinogenic drugs, convinced that it may help him unlock different states of consciousness. The experiments are a success at first, but as Jessup continues his work, he begins to experience altered mental and also physical states. As he spends more time in sensory deprivation, his grip on reality begins to slip away."
However ths urge to follow through with it was never strong enough.

(55,735 posts)some guys had one in a small apt where I lived, it was pretty homemade/basic, like floating in giant tub of warm water in the dark. imagine your bathtub being as big as a twin bed, turn out the lights, quiet neighborhood or sound reduced room... if you meditate or spend quiet time by yourself it is nice. if you are used to electronic and other noise, can't handle thinking or being alone it might take a little getting used to.
try it, especially if it doesn't cost a lot. you might like it but how will you know? it isn't going to hurt you. (unless the water isn't clean or something like that)
