Related: About this forumHow do I find a non-fad-based therapist?
Years ago, everybody had Tourettes even though they didn't tick.
Lately mindfulness is the hammer they hit every nail with.
Me: I'm having issues with obsessions.
Them: You need to learn how to breathe.
Me: I'm a trained singer and have done yoga since the 80's. I know how to breathe. Obsessions?
Them: You need to practice mindfulness. Mantras may help.
Me: I study Jung and have done Trancendental Meditation since the 70's. Try again.
Them: You're not cooperating.

(2,755 posts)I think I could benefit from a therapist, my fear, a religions therapist. The difference in
believing and not believing is profound and to me not reconcilable. Meaning I don't think a believer can understand a lack of belief so how do they understand the issues facing a non-believer.

Good luck!
This is how I found my person. It also helps having somebody who you can relate to and get along with.

(4,632 posts)Them: You are depressed because you are overweight.
Me: I've lost 237 lbs.
Them: Denial about your weight is causing your depression.
Me: Therapists who body shame are part of the problem.
Them: Patient is aggressive and hostile. Prayer is recommended.

(14,876 posts)One that offers a degree in psychology? Usually the head of that department knows most of the therapists in the area and can refer you.

(19,023 posts)Far from being a fad, Mindfulness practice has a huge body of evidence for its effectiveness in helping treat a wide range of issues. The mindfulness training I have been through did not involve mantras.
That said, a good therapist should listen to you and not offer only one treatment option, but should definitely consider evidence based approaches that they are compentent in and you are comfortable with.
The state you live in may have a professional association (in California it is CAMFT) that has a registry of therapists, their experience and specializations.
(My opinion as a retired therapist)

(11,098 posts)But EMDR is a newer therapy that directly addresses life trauma. Often times a lot of things like anxieties, inability to focus and other characteristics or issues that we struggle with could be rooted in our traumas. I have done a couple months of EMDR and noticed substantial changes in my irritability, depression anxiety and overall happiness. As another poster mentioned, psychology today is a great place to find people. Also I heard Path is also a good place to look which takes a lot of the major insurances:

(19,023 posts)Although quite trendy, like mindfulness, it has a huge evidence base, and is especially effective in treating trauma.

(11,098 posts)it came around. All I can say is that it seems to have substantially improved my life in so many ways: my focus, memory, SI, anxieties, etc. I also know other people who it has helped.

(19,023 posts)Francine Shapiro, who developed the model, kept a tight reign on who could use the treatment in their practice, initially requiring them to be trained directly by her or 1-2 other research associates, including extensive practicum hours and supervision. EMDR wasnt something that could be learned in a weekend workshop.
Then about ten years ago, something did change; perhaps there were enough experienced practitioners in the field now, but trainings became more widespread and easier to access, and stringent requirements for certification seemed to be relaxed, so more therapists began advertising it as part of their practice.

(19,023 posts)I dont know if Medicaid covers psychotherapy services, but the professional organization for your state might have listings of the members who accept various payment sources,

(12,988 posts)I don't know if they have limits on which diagnosis gets treated or what. Mine's covered tho. If you are seeking a therapist and have medical assistance ask the therapist if they accept MA. Then tell them the third party corporate insurer parasite "provider" you have and see if it is approved.

(6,992 posts)Me: Hello, I wish to see a therapist but I do not have any money.
Every place that offers any help worth a shit: We cannot help you. I wish you the best in your efforts. Good day!
(I don't mind 'for profit' healthcare, I mind that it is the only option anyone has.)
I_UndergroundPanther
(12,988 posts)and for profit insurance is why we cant have universal healthcare like civilized countries do.

(12,988 posts)the meditation, the stupid cognitive behavior therapy.. yeah too many pop psychologists out there.
I hate this eastern religious practices, positive think and mind-fucking myself (CBT) bullshit as if its a part of therapy. For me it doesn't work and I feel like the therapist isn't listening me. Like they're just selling some new age thing they have faith in. Christian therapy Hahahahaaa yeah.
All of this shit has nothing to do with what I need to heal. I feel ya.
