States Take a Stand Against Parental Involvement Laws | July 17, 2015

A majority of states have limited young women's access to abortion by passing parental involvement laws, and many of those states are further restricting the process by which minors can seek a court's permission to obtain an abortion without having to involve a parent or guardian. However, lawmakers in some states -- including Maine and New Mexico -- have managed to block such restrictions.

My heart dropped when I heard the news on July 13th, 2013. In just one month, a youth-targeted abortion law was going to be enforced ... requiring that medical providers of youth under 18 notify a parent or guardian at least 48 hours before providing an abortion. Fortunately, the ACLU had already set up a judicial bypass process that could spring into action for youth seeking an abortion, and we were ready to spearhead a movement to repeal this dangerous law. Since that day, it hasn't been easy.

Maine Legislature Defeats Parental Involvement Bill

The Maine Legislature rejected a bill (LD 83) that would have required minors to involve their parent in their abortion decision, the Bangor Daily News/Maine Sun Journal reports.

Texas Gov. Signs Bill Tightening Judicial Bypass Restrictions for Minors Seeking Abortion

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed a bill (HB 3994) imposing additional restrictions on minors seeking a court's permission to receive abortion care instead of obtaining parental consent for the procedure, AP/Dallas Morning News reports.
