Smoking Cessation
Related: About this forumAdvice on how to get rid of smoke smell in house please.
If anyone has any tips, especially for upholstery, I'd appreciate it.
I've been smoking in my house for years, and as my first step to quit I am cutting back by only
smoking outside/in the garage. When I'm at my daughter's house, I automatically cut my smoking
in half by doing this. It is also helping here, but I keep smelling cigarettes in the house and that
gets me cranky and wanting one.
We got another smoke-free couch from my daughter, and will be getting rid of the old one that is now
in the garage. But we are keeping a big stuffed recliner, another chair, carpet, and drapes. I'm going
to steam clean the carpets tomorrow (carefully as they are wool), and I'll have to see when I can afford
to get the drapes drycleaned...they are enormous, heavy, and it won't be cheap.
Going to scrub the walls and windows etc.
But if anyone has any other tips, I'd appreciate it.

(68,644 posts)You can paint and recarpet but it's everywhere.
Once you quit completely you'll still open a book or grab a piece of clothing from a drawer and catch a whiff.
I still do after three years (two weeks from today will be three years).
Good luck, you can do it!

(7,699 posts)they are behind glass doors, I know it will still be there. I'm just trying to get rid of
the overwhelming aura of it. I can deal with the rest.....likely because I've burned out
a lot of my sense of smell after 35 years of chain smoking.
Thanks for the good wishes; I know I need them!

(68,644 posts)My parents died this spring and I had to de-smell the house as my mom was a smoker.
Fabreze and the Safeway generic equivalent of it worked over time.
That's what I would try.

(4 posts)What i would suggest you is try using a room freshener whenever you smell cigarette in your house or try opening all your doors and windows daily in the morning for hours and later you may also try putting an Exhaust Fan in or reverse fan that may put out the whole smell out of the house.

(55 posts)The most important thing is that why are you addicted. Can you leave this? I would like to advise that there is no any best tips rather than leaving this bad habit. That is all.
I use Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator or Febreze Air Effects Mint & Refresh. Either one works splendidly.
The other types of Febreze have an unbelievably long-lasting strong aroma that never seems to dissipate. But the above two seem to lightly scent the air momentarily, and all smoking odors are gone gone gone... as well as cooking odors, pet odors, etc.
