(110,159 posts)really, 20 sec? or is it every 20 minutes we get the urge. cant remember
hey, once i drank water every time i felt the want. that helped. stopped the craving immediately

(2,514 posts)at least thats what it says in the nicotine anonymous literature, every 20 mins.. yep the water thing really helps
actually there are some tools to deal with the cravings.. the 5d's work well early on.. 5 little ways to beat a craving
1.. distract.. (do something else) for instance maybe wash dishes, ever try to smoke with wet hands..
2.. delay..(i dont need one now).. put if off for 5 mins , then another period, and yet another.. continued delays = a quit
3.. discuss if a member of a support groupcall someone, or post to the internet
4.. deep breathe.. most smokers have to learn to breathe deeply again, often the only time we did soo was inhaling smoke
5.. drink water.. it flushes toxins, and relieves cravings..
sorry bout typing spelling folks.. i am dyslexic and looking forward tothe spell checker working on DU3

(11,550 posts)I've never been a smoker, so I can't begin to imagine how hard it is to quit. But I have every confidence that you can finally quit if you put your mind to it. And know that you have this community for support.
Just take it one day at a time, and best of luck!

(27,985 posts)I've tackled my overeating, making poor food choices and completely changed my body and health in that regard. I've done 7 months of fitness boot camp, and I jog/run/hike 20-25 miles per week, lost 60 lbs and 16 inches from my waist. I can do this.
Strong like bull.

(11,550 posts)If you can make all those positive changes in the name of your health, then quitting your smoking should be a piece of cake! That really is fantastic!
And whether you know it or not, I'm certain that there are people around you in your life that see these changes you are making and look to you for inspiration. The next time you feel like taking a drag, remember those people.
Seriously, your changes are amazing. Keep going, girl!

(9 posts)Tomorrow morning, I am going to wake up and slap that baby on and move on with my life. No more smelling like an ashtray, no more breathing hard from walking up a couple of flights of stairs, no more phlegm, none of it.

(4,309 posts)Just found this group. I've been smoking waaaaaay too long and would love to quit. Way too expensive these days. I resolve to quit on Sunday but after some work stress on Monday I'm a confirmed smoker once again. Live-in daughter who is 24 smokes and that makes it even harder to give it up.

(62,683 posts)Just keep on trying. I had to do it (can't count how many times) until finally it was -- for whatever the hell reason -- the right time.
Don't give up! Good luck!
