Initial weight was 273 lbs. I couldn't fit into my clothes anymore. So I went to a bariatric doctor and she prescribed my a high protein, low carb, very low sugar, 1500 calorie diet. It's a pain in the ass to stick to since some of the foods I was to eat were cost prohibitive, such as wild rice and steel cut oatmeal (I eat oatmeal w/o cooking it, just with milk). But I stuck with it and lost almost 4 pounds in 2 weeks.
I have to eat in this order: protein first, veggies and legumes such as beans second, and carbs last. Believe me, it works to keep me full.
Now I can fit into the shorts I just bought.

It really helps with my diabetes.
But I get tired of snacking on beef jerky and the like. Hamburgers without the buns. No BBQ (at least with no sugar). And I love muffins... and pie... sigh.
meat and veggies... and a few beans from time to time.
Almost no fruit either.

(34,893 posts)Because they say once you get to be my age the carbs will add pounds in the blink of an eye .... It's so true.
I'm not a bread lover, so that's not a problem. In fact, I can't even eat a whole sandwich, the bread makes me feel bloated.
My problem is chocolate .... Getting through the day without any is tough.

but you can flavor things with chocolate.

(17,101 posts)Don't get anything with malitol, it's a laxative for many people. Look for a stevia and erythritol blend - Cavalier and Lily's are two that come to mind. They're specialty items, health food stores and amazon carry them. I've tried them both. They won't replace a high quality Belgian chocolate, but they will satisfy the craving. Or make a chocolate avocado pudding (use coconut milk, it's richer) and that may help too.

(17,101 posts)with almond and/or coconut flour, psyllium husk, flaxmeal or a combination of all of them. Some are mug bread buns, 1 minute in the microwave and they're done, others are in batches, baking for 45 minutes. Plenty of recipes on the net. Best to toast the mug bread after microwaving.

(17,101 posts)They are very occasional treats and not everyday items. Coconut flour is far less expensive than almond flour if cost is a factor, so you can look for those recipes on the net. Tons of them on pinterest.

(17,101 posts)you can search for nut free keto muffins, cookies etc. You'll find lots of people on LCHF or keto with varying food sensitivites and allergies. If you're vegan, use a flaxseed or chia egg instead.
Nope in answer to your question...going vegetarian just made me sicker...and I love nuts!! Couldn't give them up.

(21,747 posts)they did a test.tested a group eating fresh hot spaghetti dinner, then cold, then reheated spaghetti and the reheated showed way less sugars. so. leftovers/reheated is better. also did that meat 1st, veg + carbs last.

(722 posts)Because fiber not only bulks up stool, high levels of fiber clean the gut and create quicker sensations of fullness when you eat food, so calorie counting is much easier and less unsatisfying. But you need both soluble and insoluble, both are absolutely essential.
I take a mixture of flaxseed powder (insoluble) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inulin (soluble, via acacia senagal powder) mixed with fruit juice. Start with less and work your way up to 4-6 tbsp/day of each (or more even, you'll quickly find the level that works best for you). I've lost >10lb in a month this way, admittedly with a few diet changes. But I can eat almost anything i want and not gain very much weight at all if I keep the fiber levels high. It works for me like nothing else.
I don't recommend psyllum husk. I took it for years but it didn't do the job very well compared to the above.

(17,101 posts)and grind it in a coffee grinder, then bag it and store it in the freezer. Flaxmeal goes rancid quickly.
However, it's fat that keeps you full the longest. Add extra butter, olive oil or even a few slices of avocado to meals and watch your appetite decrease. Must be low carb and low-no sugar for it to work.

(2,159 posts)I have been keeping my grams of carbs between 20 and 50 per day, and what helps me is making fathead (or fat head) dough pizzas and pesto with almonds, parmesan, garlic and basil (but no oil--personal preference) on top of cabbage, zucchini, even cauliflower (although that was my least favorite).
I have also been using myfitnesspal to track everything I eat.
If you generally have a hard time losing weight (if you are insulin resistant), I highly recommend this approach. "Just eat less" or even "just eat healthy" doesn't work with everyone.

I've only needed to worry about such things in the past several years, was always trim and athletic. I miss that body....
