Weight Loss/Maintenance
Related: About this forumKeto diet update
A1c dropped form 9.1% to 5.7% in three months. Dropped 58 pounds in 4.5 months. Lipids and liver function tests dramatically improved.
Strongly recommend keto to anyone who is obese. I think it saved my life.

(3,234 posts)Do you have any recommendations where I could go to read more on keto? I have a lot of weight to lose & I think it may be right for me. I am confused on the whole structure though with trying to figure out how much I should eat, what my carb intake should be, all that.
Thanks!

(120,813 posts)The basic principle is to eat more protein and vegetables and stay away from high-carb foods, especially processed foods - pastries, stuff made with high-fructose corn syrup or sugar, as well as starchy food like potatoes, white rice and pasta. Any food that contains carbs should have other nutritional value as well, like beans, which have protein. High "good" fat foods like avocados and salmon are recommended - I ate a lot of salmon for awhile. The other thing that really helped me was walking. I reached a plateau after about 35 lbs., decided I needed more exercise, so I started walking 2-4 miles a day, which I still do. Also, when you've lost some significant amount of weight, buy new clothes as a reminder to keep going; don't let your new clothes get tight! And get rid of the old ones. I've loosened up a little on carb-eating but I still stay away from sweets and desserts, and I'm keeping the weight off. Once you get into the habit of eating a certain way it gets a lot easier. You might want to talk to a doctor if you have any health issues or allergies, but the basic high protein, low carb thing is pretty easy to adapt to. Good luck!

(3,134 posts)Doing 20 carbs a day gave me the shakes and heart palpitations. I'm now between about 50-75 carbs per day and the weight loss is a bit slower but I feel better.

(17,995 posts)or at least how my doctor is consulting me. 16/8 is common with some 24s thrown in (once per week). In theory the ketones suppress the appetite, and you generate the ketones by avoiding carbs (except for non-starchy vegetables, pretty much all carbs). All fruits except avocados (which is a preferred food on keto), tomatoes, and eggplants are out. Even the last two should be limited.
Onions only in moderation (basically used in cooking or in a salad). Potatoes are definitely out. Carrots are on the fence. Corn, peas, and beans are out. No grains.
Upside is olive oil and butter are in. All meat and eggs are in.
Best vegetables:
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Zucchini
Asparagus
Celery
Bell Peppers
Lettuce of all types
Mushrooms (actually a fungus)

(1,234 posts)I've lost over 50 lbs went from an A1c of 11.9 to an A1c of 4.7 although I'm probably more low carb than keto. I eat fruit but no grains
