Weight Loss/Maintenance
Related: About this forumNew DU? Or New D-YOU? Share your goals here!
With the kickoff of the new DU3 software, can we get some goal-sharing going on here?
I'm not close to a scale and that's by design. But I know I'm around 230 or so and a healthy BMI for my height suggests that I would be better at 160. That's 70 pounds - a long term goal to be sure.
But how about a six-month goal? That would be mid-June, 26 weeks. I think I can commit to at least 30 pounds by then, which should put me under 200 again.
Anybody else want to share?

(8,492 posts)I have no such lofty goals. My goal is to not die.
Work towards your goal wisely and be sure to enjoy the process to ensure it remains a lifestyle once achieved! You'll feel soooooo much better! I believe in you!
30 lbs. in 6 months is attainable. Be sure to recognize the health achievements, as well.

(20,234 posts)Since the start of summer I went from somewhere over 160 (probably close to 170 but I stopped weighing at that point) to 134 today, my goal was getting back to 135. If I got to 130, I'd be okay with that, but I'm feeling healthy at this weight.
I'm going to try to lose enough that I can absorb the christmas holiday pudge and stay at my goal, then for the next year experiment with what I can add back in to maintain without losing more. I'd like to have an occasional unsweetened yogurt, a slice of whole wheat bread, and some fruit. Maybe on weekends, if I'm strict M-F.
And I'm working on doing a chinup, I'd like to do my first one ever some time next year.

(60,531 posts)Did it via Weight Watchers (both my wife and I joined)....am 6 feet, BMI says I need to get to 184, but I am pretty big framed....
my plans are to try to hold at 208 ish through the winter through the holiday meal hazards - I am an avid gardener and that is worth quite a few pounds - so starting say in Feb, hope to cut some more. 190 would be great - 184 kind of unbelievable!
I seem to be at a dreaded plateau - eating around 35-40 points (WW terms) per day, but still holding at 208 - taking 1-3 mile dog walks each day. Not sure what will knock me off the plateau!
Still - size 36 jeans is a hell of a lot better than the 42s I was starting to have to squeeze into!

(22,057 posts)Started out a few years ago at 225 lb and worked my way down , then back up then down again.
Its a bitch, but I'm much happier with less weight.

(60,531 posts)losing that 50 lbs has had an incredible impact on my mobility. You are doing well too....
What's amazing is how fast it goes on.....and how slow this last little bit is coming off!

(22,057 posts)15 pounds has been really hard this time. I was down 7 from 185, now maybe 3 with Christmas coming up. We had been hitting the gym regularly but the last three weeks have seen major backsliding. Only so many hours in a day, even when you're retired and you do what you can.
Congrats on the progress you've made and good luck on the home stretch!

(22,340 posts)I started Weight Watchers at 337. I am now 287. I hope to get into the 260s by spring so that I can start effectively biking in hopes of doing a 100-mile ride in August. Mid-June goal would be 257. I think that is ambitious and may not be achieved, but it is what I'm shooting for. It would be nice to be down 80 pounds in one year.
A key for me seems to be getting in enough exercise--serious exercise--every week.

(172 posts)loose about 30 lbs, even though I only need to loose 10 lbs. to get my bmi back under 25. I want to get rid of a few more pounds so I can get back to my high school weight. Currently I'm at 175. Would trying to drop 2 lbs. a week be reasonable?

(23,872 posts)It's doable, but gradual changes work the best, and 1 pound a week is good for gradual changes. That's what I see recommended.

(63 posts)I lost 40 pounds about 3 years ago, but never got to my goal weight. I regained 20 pounds, but I've lost 5 pounds since. I'm starting my new years weight loss now, giving myself permission to not face it for another three weeks would be disasterous. So, from my current weight, I want to lose 40 pounds.
(by the way, does anybody know how to spell check posts here at DU3, or should I just make sure that my browser has a spell check function?)

yes, it took that long, and yes, it was very frustrating at times BUT....
losing only 1/4 to 1/2 a pound a week was good for a few reasons
1 i never felt 'starved', i adjusted portions slowly and didn't starve myself. my stomach shrank slowly
2 i worked out faithfully so at my new weight, i don't have all that awful loose skin that comes with fast weight loss
3 i am maintaining my new weight easily, no yo-yoing at all during all these months
while i could still stand to lose 10 more, it's coming off still, slowly but surely.
edited to correct amount of weight lost, hubby lost 70, not me

(17,045 posts)Question: I'm sure you knew that making the changes you made would work long before you made them. Was there something that changed in your life or in you that allowed to set yourself up to actually do things differently?

(49,314 posts)hubby came home from the Doctor the end of February and said "We can be fat or we can be old, but we can't be both...and we have no control over old! I'm changing my life but I need your help and hope you'll come along with me."
since he's 4 years younger than I am and I know how disciplined he is, I figured I'd better come along with the program. So I researched the diet changes and he researched the exercise stuff and one week later, off we went.
The biggest change we made to start was cutting out every bit of High Fructose Corn Syrup (not easy if you've ever read labels). We started with a Beach Body program (Power 90 Bootcamp) and pretty much followed their high protein, low fat recommendations to start and here we are!

(17,045 posts)It's been so hard for me to get my husband to make better food choices with me - and we both work so much. I try to make change by myself , but all the structures around me remain the same and I just slide back into my old ways...which really actually aren't that bad, but I guess are very bad for me.
My husband, for example, has pretty much the same lifestyle I do but you can add 3 sleeves of cookies a week and less walking - yet he's totally fit.

(17,045 posts)I want to reduce stress in my life, improve my ability to manage stress that I cannot remove, make healthier food choices and spend more time playing. My hope is that making changes in this direction will lead to being two dress sizes smaller by summer.
I think I've identified my main issues:
Stress
Sugar and white starch
Not enough fruits and vegatables
Too much screen time
Stress
and stress...
