Weight Loss/Maintenance

Has anyone tried protein powder to make home made shakes as a meal replacement?
(I know you can buy some brand name shakes already bottled)
I read an article about Matthew McConaughey losing weight for a movie role by use of a liquid diet,
and thought I might try making some shakes as replacement for one or two daily meals.

(9,464 posts)You can do this, but make sure that you take vitamins, and that the meals you eat other than the shakes include fruits and veggies. I did this in the lead up to and for a few weeks after weight-loss surgery. But you will eventually have to go back to eating real food. So your eating habits surrounding regular food will need to change long-term to maintain the weight loss.

(34,195 posts)I'm curious what you mixed your powder with?
I'm thinking powdered milk for mine.

(13 posts)is not ideal for the body. Actually, raw goat's milk would not be too bad because of its lower casein/protein content.

(34,195 posts)Actually, I meant other ingredients.
Reading Livestrong on line, some put xanthum gum, or add some form of fiber.
I will begin some shakes this week and plan to add fresh fruit and ice cubes..

(13 posts)You could use an organic soy milk or even make your own raw almond mylk. In any case, lose the cow pus.

(13 posts)The body cannot absorb calcium carbonate because (wait for it) it's rock! There is no bio-availability in crushed rocks. It can collect in various joints and also create kidney stones. Iron tabs are likewise dangerous--collecting in the body and can actually cause health problems.
If you want a bioactive super level of vitamin/mineral infusion, get a masticating juicer and several times a week make juices from beets and dandelion (iron-rich), celery (organic sodium, which is actually GOOD for blood pressure!), lemon (liver-cleansing), etc.

(7 posts)there are lots of pills too, for a 21 day cleanse. I lost 12 lbs. It works because you body is getting all the nutrients you need, so you don't feel hungry. You can eat all the fruits and veggies you want. The shake is not tasty, but not unpleasant... I looked at it as simply fuel. My advise is if you want to try it, go for the good organic natural stuff... your body will thank you. Good Luck!!

(29,100 posts)I have lost almost 45 pounds since August using a plan suggested by my medical provider. As I have multiple medical issues I needed to take what I saw as drastic measures to reduce my body weight. My insurance would not cover bariatric surgery so I am biting the bullet and on a low calorie, lower carb, low fat program. It was a big leap for me as by nature I have been hostile to the idea of food replacements and artificial products in general. My "normal" eating plan was primarily Vegan. I tried the McDougall plan which just did not work for me..(sadness--I know others have had great success)
So anywhoo....What works for one person may not work for another.
If you want to try a protein shake Costco carries Muscle Milk Light for a good price. It doesn't taste bad. I don't use it any longer as I use another plan's shakes. Some days I have as many as three a day. I am feeling much better physically than I have in years and my chronic pain has subsided somewhat.
I still have hungry days with this way of eating but for the most part I am able to stick with the plan almost 100 % My cheating pretty much consists of eating more veg and protein than I should...

(1 post)Hope I could do that too...
But you're right "What works for one person may not work for another."
And to add up, some people said that "water therapy" is also the best in our body to stay good and healthy.
