What is haluski? The answer, like with many dishes, depends on who youre asking.
Different varieties pop up across Eastern Europe, including Slovakia, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine, where its the national dish. The variations likely stem from the fact that haluski simply means dumplings. Just as there are many ways to make a kugel, there are many ways to make a dumpling dish.

(62,063 posts)... though my Romanian and Bulgarian friends made it for dinner parties.
We used a bit of bacon for the 'halushki', I made pirogi until I discovered Mrs T's. Still make Pogoc as my grandmother called it and a Georgian cheese bread boat I don't remember the name of. Halupka, still make it and stuffed peppers.
That part of the family came from Czechoslovakia and were farmers and coal miners. My grandfather was both in Nanty Glo, PA.
