The sourdough starter I made last year. I worked for months to get her to rise perfectly and then tonight, I killed her.
Admittedly, I'd had a few beers and I put her in the oven and set the temperature to 350°. Just to warm it up, and I forgot. Usually, I just keep it on for 30 or so seconds, but tonight, I forgot to turn it off.
RIP Betty.

(6,090 posts)Just started making sourdough. Took a few tries to get my starter going. Think I may divide it at some point to have a spare container as I could easily make a similar mistake.

It took me a while to get it to fester to the right place, the wine yeast that was the original organism just didn't have enough oomph to make bread rise, although it bubbled the starter nicely. A hefty pinch of Red Star and it was off to the races, I think I kept it going for about 3 months before I moved away from sourdough bread and pancakes.
It was the best tasting starter I ever worked with.
