What's for Dinner, Thurs., June 6, 2024

Spicy mango salad over mustard greens. The salad has shallots that I pulled from the garden last night. In addition, red pepper flakes, olive oil, lime juice, and cilantro.

I have boneless, skinless chicken thighs in the slow cooker. I bought them from WF and have had them before. So delicious. I have some peanut sauce I didn't use from a recent recipe, so I'm thinking I might put this sauce with one of the thighs for tonight.

Bottled up some cherry kombucha, too.

For dessert, I shredded a dark chocolate bar and toasted some peanuts and coconut. This will be the topping for a no-sugar ice cream sundae. Dark Chinese tea.

---------------------

I've been meaning to mention this but forgot for a couple days. I went shopping at Aldi and found a tremendous price drop. It was widespread, too, not on just a few items. In fact it was so good that I doubled up on a number of items. I didn't know if it was permanent or temporary.

So I'm wondering if this is foretelling a price drop at other stores, and possibly a widespread drop in grocery prices. If it is, it would be great for the election.

A while back, we had another DU poster who pays close attention to prices say that she saw the overall trend downward.

I mentioned it to the Aldi checkout person and she nodded, knowing what I was talking about. If you go and check it out, just watch for the red tags.

1. Pasta and sausages

The First Mate is frying garlic, onions and some juicy Italian pork sausages. She also has a bunch of thyme from our greenhouse.

Today has been rainy so she stayed in the cabin making tomato sauce all topped with grated Parmesan cheese. The boat smells delightful! Spaghetti will be the base for the sauce and sausages and a Caesar salad rounds out the meal.

We have a ripe Bosc pear soaking in a bit of brandy for dessert

Regarding prices, I’ve noticed them going down, (except on Block Island where asparagus was $8 a bunch!). This is true in NYC, upstate NY/PA and in Haverstraw, NY.

It’s kind of strange for an economy the Republicans claim is in decline!

5. Ground chicken patty

I had some ground up chicken, sauteed it with spices. I baked a loaf of bread yesterday, had a slice of that and 1/2 an avocado.
I haven't been home much or cooking much the last couple of weeks. Should be back to a regular schedule by Monday
Last time I was in Aldi, I noticed prices were going down. Cheese and chicken was cheaper. I'm going to shop tomorrow, so I'll pass along what I see. Gas dropped .07 cents a gallon since last week.
As usual, the meal choices sound delicious!

7. Re gas prices

I don't know if you caught Chris Hayes tonight, but he had a segment on how Biden has handled gas prices using the reserves as a powerful tool in the marketplace. The guest who was on to discuss it was Dan Dicker, who studies the oil market and I think he also has a newsletter, probably one of those high priced ones that goes to investors.

He was unabashed in his admiration for how Biden has bought when prices were low and sold when high. In fact, I think he said Biden made $5 billion on the last sale of oil reserves.

Anyway, if you can catch it, it is well worth watching.

Glad you're back! Always enjoy hearing about your energetic forays in the kitchen.

Really nice to hear from you! I didn't watch Chris Hayes, nice to know that President Biden is handling some of the gouging. Read on DU last week that the oil countries are going to maintain the lower production rate.
So many people don't realize how masterful the Biden administration is. They are cleaning up the mess traitor left, improving so many areas of government. There are great minds focused on doing the best for the most
Happy Friday!

Frozen pizza fancied up with extra cheese, red pepper flakes, diced onion, bell peppers, tomatoes, and also basil from the garden. Bag salad with Ranch. Root beer.

It’s too hot to cook, it was bad enough quickly using the oven for the pizza!

For dessert: ice cream sandwich
