Cooking & Baking

I stayed with my friend this week, who has taken minimalism to an extreme rarely seen outside a hermit's cave. She is not poor, but she is gadget deprived. Staying with her is a cross between camping and dorm life. I've stayed with her for varying periods of time over our many years as friends. This time, I went prepared. I took dishes, pans, utensils, my coffee maker, coffee, food, spices, towels, and washclothes. This time, I only had to buy a dish towel and a coffee mug after I got there. I was going to bake her a loaf of bread, but her oven door is sprung, so no baking all week. I took the last of a loaf from home, so we had that. I like omelets and toast, but she has no toaster, so I grilled slices in a frying pan I brought. Needless to say, her eating habits are different than mine. I survived the week roughing it, got home yesterday.
And today, in my own dear kitchen, I baked a loaf of bread. I put together a fresh cucumber, onion and pepper salad, made some s.f. lime jello. I have veggies ready for jalepeno chicken I'll make later. Life is good.

(10,115 posts)When we moved to this house more than twenty years ago, my cousin and his wife came down to help us move some of the big stuff on his trailer. While we moved boxes and boxes and boxes of books, his wife and mine packed up the kitchen.
After a couple of hours, Judy looked at my wife and said, Bob has more kitchen stuff than Emeril!

(6,810 posts)I love to eat good food prepared at home in my own kitchen where I know the cook is clean and always washes her hands! And, it's such a creative outlet for me. But, to each their own. Cook away, Marthe48! Have a blast in your gadget filled sanctuary.

(2,922 posts)I just got done baking sourdough olive and sun-dried tomatoes focaccia and a loaf of regular white sourdough with sesame seeds. I think the smell of fresh baked bread is almost as heavenly as eating it--Lord! that focaccia was to die for! When I go to my daughter's house, I feel her kitchen is pretty sparse compared to mine. They eat out more than they eat in, sadly and it is hard for me to put a proper meal together when I'm with her. I'm going there next week and I'll think I'll only prepare to cook in the InstaPot, which she has. I hate eating out, but my grandkids are mighty picky eaters. I'll try to figure out something simple and kid friendly for my visit.
I don't know how long you were at your friend's house, but I know you were glad to get back to your own kitchen. I know I will be after being at my daughter's for a few days.
