Related: About this forumI'm so excited
on the 7th of this month I made a 4 ft diameter bed for 25 asparagus crowns. This morning I have 27 spears up and they are from the crowns along the outer edge of the circle. I thought I had leveled the dirt over them but after it rained the dirt settled down where there is a small crown to my circle. No shoots as of yet coming out of the middle where the dirt is deeper. I've got fern already starting on the first dozen or so spears to come up.
Anyways just wanted to let you all know that this is the most fun I've had in a while. Since years ago when I used to grow my own whacky 'backy

(51,076 posts)We haven't picked any and at last count I have 45 stalks/spears up. Can hardly wait until next year to start harvesting some. I can tell where every crown is and I won't pick every spear that comes up off any one of the crowns. OSU, Ok. St. U. did a study several years ago and their finding was that it really didn't matter if you started picking them the first year or not in the whole scheme of things. I've elected to not pick any this year but watch out next year. They concluded that waiting for the third year was an old wives tale, not to be taken seriously. I feel comfortable in what I'm planning to do.
