(28,361 posts)I had an entrance door with rack adjustments. Brass screws into wood. Over time, adustments failed. So I bored our the holes and put brass threaded inserts in the door and never had a problem with adjusting the rack after that. Cost $.70 total. Why didn't Anderson put this in, in the 1st place?

(40,092 posts)Alas! Because the bean counters figured that that 70 cents was a significant cost in the manufacturing process, affecting the selling price.
Like Ford figured that lawsuits for dead people were cheaper than fixing a Pinto gas tank design problem.

(28,361 posts)The door cost, I think $3000.00 when it was installed in 2000. Like I wouldn't have paid that extra $.70 to not have to do what I ended up doing.....

(37,851 posts)I miss the days of real hardware stores that knew what a watch a ma call it was. I was repairing a late 19th century table the was wobbly mostly from the glue drying out but also the economy of brass screws. Today we have some assembly required designed to fail products.
