Related: About this forumIf this were your jade plant, what would you do?
There is only the one branch off the main trunk. I've learned to love its quirkiness but I think it's time for a change. I'm wondering if I can cut off the branch and get it to root; but then the bare trunk wouldn't have a reason to keep living. Maybe I should leave it alone.

(4,228 posts)After it sprouts new growth from the base, I'd start SLOWLY trimming back those long, spindly branches, and stick each one in a new pot, or outside if you live where they can grow outside year around.
My brother used to just break off a single leaf and stick it in the dirt when he was 5 and we lived in southern California. Had jade plants EVERYWHERE in no time at all.

(10,252 posts)It might be interesting to try and graft a small branch into the old big stem. But I'd need to do a little research on the best methods of grafting. If it's a big flop and everything dies, take it as a lesson in impermanence.

(4,480 posts)Definitely a bigger pot; you could bury a little more of the trunk to enhance that effect and place the plant where that flowing appearance works, the edge of a rail etc.
I would take a smaller cutting and see if that would take root.

(34,345 posts)you could try to pin one of those branches to the dirt and see if it will root like that. I have no idea if it will, hopefully if that is a dumb idea someone will let us both know!

(1,922 posts)He has started new jades regularly from his original he got in New Mexico over 30 years ago. We still have 2, our daughter has some, many friends have them. So I know you can do something with it. I really like the way it is shaped now, has a pleasing quirky look to it.
