I grew up in northern Lower Michigan. When I was 12, my grandma and I took the train from Chicago to visit relatives in Lodi, California. They had a huge fig tree in their back yard and I thought it was the most exotic thing I'd ever seen, lol. My only exposure to figs was Fig Newtons (blech) and the fresh figs were a revelation.
