(18,219 posts)But my mouth is watering just looking at the pictures. I LOVE peaches, even though I am allergic to them. I just have to deal with it....rash on mouth and probably all the way down and out. But I can't help myself. Yummy!

(36,899 posts)They actually have some varieties that ripen in early May, but these are better suited for South Texas.
My peach trees are about 10 years old and I don't remember for sure what varieties I planted. I'm reasonably sure the one I harvested today is a Ranger Peach. I have no idea what the other one is, but it ripens at the end of July to early August.

(6,581 posts)We lost virtually everything here in Michigan. I have about 25 peach trees, and so far, I've found 4 peaches total, three of them on one branch of one tree that is close to a shelter belt of larger shade trees, which protected it somewhat from the many freezes we had in April AFTER record warmth of 90 degrees in March. Coldest morning was about 25-26 the last weekend in April, and that did them all in for sure.

(36,899 posts)I know the feeling. Since I've moved to Texas I haven't had much problem with late freezes, but a few years ago I lost everything on all but one tree (I had three at the time).

(9,356 posts)That is a large amount of peaches. Do you sell some of them at a farmer's markets, eat them, can them, or share with family? I am just wondering.

(36,899 posts)I like them sliced with plain yogurt or with grape nuts or just by themselves. I've done canning and preserves before, but now I have two different people who will take all I give them and give me preserves in return. Peach preserves are my all time favorite, but I'm not really fond of all the work required to get them. For the peaches I send off to make preserves with, I pick them at the mature stage (as opposed to the ripe stage). For the ones I eat by themselves, I leave them on the tree until they get to the ripe stage.
