Interesting. I'm gonna bookmark my own thread. Never know when this information can come in handy.

(29,414 posts)What'd they, do, shake the tree before taking that photo? I know they give off massive amounts of pollen (my family live in central Texas and get "cedar fever" annually) but I've never seen a literal cloud emanating off of one.
Nonetheless, thanks for the thread. When I have space for a garden, I'll likely plant at least one pecan tree and one pomegranate tree

(18,219 posts)and had to laugh at the first tree mentioned----Gingko. Especially if it is a female. In an ecology class I had, the professor needed some Gingko leaves so we could do a study on streams. Since the Gingko leaves are distinctive and will not be found in nature in our area, we used these leaves. Well, I collected bags full of the leaves, and they were from a female tree. I got in the car and realized that I smelled like cat shit----and the whole science building smelled like cat shit while we were working with the leaves. Ugh.
I would add Pin Oaks because of all the ugly lower branches that grow downward and then die, and so much dropping of branches. And Norway Maple, which puts out a chemical that prevents anything from growing under it, so, no grass in a 20 foot circle around my tree.

(18,219 posts)who knew where a Gingko tree was....there were extra points for finding the leaves. And extra points for putting the leaves together into bags of 100. Those people earned the points.
And if you have never smelled Gingko fruit, you will not know the truth of the cat shit smell.

(52,992 posts)there are no 'bad' trees. I'm extremely sad today since I had to have a dead 30 foot tall black walnut taken out Sunday. It was killed after a heavy ice storm in 2009 and a 'hatchet' job of a tree trimming.

(17,055 posts)old mature trees and get very upset when people cut them down.
When we visited Newport, RI everyone was very interested in the mansions, the antique furniture, the ocean views, etc.
Not me. There are so many different kind of trees in those yards, they had them all marked and explained what kind they were and where the came from. I was in heaven. Just to lightly touch a tree gives me a feeling I just can't describe. I've just always been a tree girl, love them and find them fascinating.
