My Devil's Ivy plant is discharging an oily substance on the pot

Last edited Sun May 26, 2013, 09:41 AM - Edit history (1)

It's dark, doesn't smell too bad, and doesn't seem to be affecting the plant itself. The thing is 20 years old and healthy as can be.

Any idea what this is? It happens almost daily, the oil collects on the rim and drips down the pot. No idea where it's coming from.

On edit: Not Ficus, Devil's Ivy. Sorry.

but I've never had one start weeping oil and their sap should be clear or a bit milky. Does it irritate your skin if it gets on it?

can you post pics? It could be sick, trees with slime flux have dark sap. I'm flummoxed.

The plant itself is always dry, but the pot rim is soaked in the oily stuff. It feels like thin vegetable oil.

I just cleaned the pot and repotted with fresh soil, we'll see what happens.

and have had it much longer than 20 years, and I have never seen this. I have no idea what it could be. Sorry.

(I have Devil's Ivy all over because 1) you can't kill it and 2) it has to be trimmed back so often and I was on a roll with rooting the trimmings. I should start selling it!)

Weird. Maybe a friend dumped something in it? No idea.

Oh well, thanks for your help.
