What are some good ideas for vegetables this time of year.

I was told it is a little late to start tomato plants. Is this true. I am in central Florida. I could just go ahead and get 1 gallon plants already started instead of using seeds. What others would you suggest to start now. I can plant anywhere from full sun to shade. I also have plenty of room for some type of ground vine like watermelon, pumpkin, etc.
