Need help identifying a plant.

Looks a bit like a fern to my sister and me. Found in the woods (mostly hardwoods, cedars, pines) behind our house which is located in NW Georgia, foothills of the Appalachian Mtns.

Color is a dusty burgundy. Measures about 4-1/2" across and about 3-1/2" from top to bottom.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

How tall was the plant? Did it have berries? uppityperson Dec 2017 #1
Low growing. This specimen was pulled off at the ground level. No berries. japple Dec 2017 #2

Not quite right for elderberry strain, if here I'd consider maybe something in wild carrot family. Interesting foliage, I hope someone figures it out.

I have that one and another specifically for id of Virginia wildflowers. Love them both. I have several plants in my yard that I couldn't id, but didn't want to remove them until I knew what they were. These apps have been a real plant lifesaver!

entered the observed characteristics

opposite not alternating splits
smooth not serrated
2 lobed, not 3
fatter in the middle not the base
looks sort of waxy

I was thinking a baby tree of some sort but the foliage database didn't come up with anything
