Gardening
Related: About this forumMy backyard garden
The sunniest part of my yard is a slope with ledge close to the surface in places, so I have built raised beds over the last 8 years. This corner of the yard just squeaks out 8 hours of sun. Definitely a labor of love and my favorite part of summer.

(46,744 posts)But I don't put out much effort anymore. I used to till 400 square feet, now I don't even run the tiller. Every year the plants drown, the deer, chipmunks, rabbits, birds eat the plants, the bugs devour the leaves. Not much is sprouting this year.

(16,303 posts)I have some dwarf style tomatoes in front, then a mix of peas, beans (bush and pole), squash/zucchini, cucumbers, and a few herbs. The two lowest beds, which have decent ground depth have sweet corn growing, but its only 1-2 inches right now.
Greens bed has lettuce, spinach, carrots, leeks, and broccoli.

(25,816 posts)The endless supply of cottontails? The malicious roadrunners that jump the fence and eat everything?
I try very hard to garden here in So Az., but the water draws every creature for miles. Fences are
compromised or dug under, birds from above..... very frustrating. I just planted my first potatoes in
years and the roadrunners ate them to the ground.
I envy your garden. I will have tomatoes, garlic, onions and many peppers.

(16,303 posts)Deer are abundant, but dont jump privacy fences they cant see over (out of sight, out of mind). Cottontails would be abundant if it wasnt for the bobcats, foxes, coyotes, and fishers all competing to eat them.

(37,648 posts)It's expensive there...one of the most expensive states, I believe. So can't move there. I can only look at pictures.
Be glad you don't live where there's glaring sun.

(16,303 posts)I live in the Eastern Uplands and its not terrible out here. I have a 1/3 of an acre and 1500 sqft house plus full basement for a less than $900 mortgage. Basically as you move away from the coast and the Connecticut river valley, the costs and population plunge. Its not middle America housing costs, but Im 2 hrs from Boston and New York and I can get down to the coast in 19 minutes. Since Im an engineer in the shipbuilding industry, the coasts will be my working career home.
The terrain is pretty. Its low ( <800 ft ) rolling granite/schist/gneiss hills with rocks everywhere due to the glaciers from the last ice age. And it wants to be a forest, and must be actively maintained to avoid reverting to one.

(37,648 posts)Thanks. I live in SW Louisiana.....swampland, hurricanes, lots and lots and lots of rain. Subtropical climate. You sweat as soon as you walk outside because of the humidity.
OTOH, it's a plant mecca. Throw some seeds in the yard, and they'll grow. A wide array of plants will grow here.
