Gardening
Related: About this forumHoly moly, this weather!
This time of year, I get my gardening done early to avoid the heat. This morning, I headed out at 7:00 to transplant two ferns that were inexplicably growing in the pachysandra and do some light weeding. I kept having to stop because my glasses were fogging up. Yes, it was a pleasant 72 degrees out there, but the dew point was at an unpleasant 70 degrees.

(27,286 posts)We are headed to 89. I'm heading out, in an hour, to get the back lot mowed, before things get too sticky.
Funny thing is, I had to put my veg garden in a week later than usual, due to all of the rain and cool weather. It was so wet, I feared I'd lose everything to rot.
Then the weather turned to ideal tomato growing weather. I did lose 3, and possibly 4, tomato plants but everything else is going gangbusters, although most of the tomatoes are well behind where they should be.
I put down landscaping fabric, in the veg garden, so I don't have much weeding to do - just around the fence.
Your experiences are exactly like mine with the veggie garden.
We didnt lose any tomatoes though. The eggplants, which we planted 6, I thought were goners, although 2 of them look fairly healthy now, but theyre only about 4 tall.
String beans getting flowers and Im seeing small green tomatoes about the size of a grape....
Like yours, my veggies seem like theyll be OK but have some catching up to do for this time of year.
Im in NE Ohio, BTW. And yes its hot and sticky here today, too.

(27,286 posts)We were disheartened by how many flooded fields we saw, from Michigan, through Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Unfortunately, the tomato plants I lost were the big San Marzano Roma. The regular Roma I started from seed, along with the Golden (low acid) still don't have blooms but my Early Girl and Grape are doing great, if slightly late.
All of my peppers, summer squash, peas and beans seem to be doing good. I'm going to pop some more pea and bean seeds into the ground, as soon as my broken toes allow me some pain free ambulating.

(48,034 posts)swim suit so I can jump in the pool after gardening. I'm one of those who are in perpetual denial over my weight. "Oh, I'll wait until I work myself down to a size 10" It never will happen, but it took this 90 degree plus sauna to finally convince me. It's never been this bad, and I garden under the shade of trees. There is a hot box effect the minute you step out.

(34,631 posts)The sun is so intense and hot, I started to feel light-headed and had to get myself in the shade quickly.
Wish I had a pool to jump into! I have to go to the indoor community pool. (which is closed today, anyway).

(34,189 posts)Just to be able to jump in and cool off. They are really cheap but for under $200 if it lasts a summer or two it would be worth it!
