You will become "one of us" now. In a few years, you'll be telling everyone you know in great detail about that certain eggplant or tomato or whatever you grew. Their eyes will all glaze over, but you'll love every minute of it.

I also think it's really important that children learn where their food comes from.

I like that idea of using roof slate to construct the raised bed. It makes for an interesting look.

I am still feeling like a beginner too, even if I have been doing this a few years now. But the people posting here in Gardening are awesome. You will learn a lot from them and from your own mistakes.

I like the raised bed with roof slats.
It looks practical.

This is about the size I started with three years ago and my gardening has slowly taken over most of my back yard. It's addicting in the same way tattoos are. One day you've got a 11x3 raised bed, a few years later your back yard looks like the Hanging Gardens.

I can't wait to start mucking around in the mud! It's still way too early here tho.

We don't have much sun in our yard so generally vegetable gardens and a lot of flowers don't do well. Plus we had a rather large dog a while back so our grass was never very good looking.

So what I did is planted hardy perenial ground covers, instead of regular grass. It's coming together nice tho it took a lot of years to fill out. Our yard looks like a wild jungle and that's how we like it. I buy some hanging tomatoes to add here and there where the sun peeks in and plan to plant some
Karl Foerster grass. This will be a first try for me and I hope they survive because I am just crazy for them.

Half the joy is clever use of available space. You'll really enjoy the products of your endeavors!

I had a raised-bed in town. Now that I'm out in the boonies, I've got a bit more room. So far I've got about 1/3 of my kitchen garden in, starting from the side next to the woods. At the far end, there are heirloom greasy cut-short beans, then a patch of black beans, then spaghetti squash and watermelons. The trellis to the right has kiwi fruit vines. In a couple of months the trellis will be greened-over.

One of my female kiwis bloomed last year, so I'm hoping this year the male will bloom. Can't wait to taste kiwi fruit, sun-ripened fresh from the vine!

A few years ago my husband built me a large raised box of wood. It is holding up super well. I have mostly perennials planted in it, but we save one section for annual foods like lettuce, radish, and basil. I hope you enjoy your box and salad table as much as I've enjoyed mine.

why Gardening does not belong in Recreation, but in its old place in Home & Family. Or as someone said in DU2 more or less, recreation, that must be when I come in the house after working in the garden and lay on the floor for a couple of hours.

Looks like you are off to a good start. I'm about three years into learning to be a gardener and DU has been a great resource in that endeavor. I'm sure you'll find to be so too.

It's incredibly satisfying to eat something you grew yourself. And it's great that you are getting the boys involved. Kiddie gardener tip: radishes grow fast and give almost instant gratification while you wait for the rest to get going-- plus they help repel squash bugs! If you don't like to eat them, let them flower. They get quite tall and have pretty blooms.
