My local garden centers in Connecticut are reporting that they are considered essential and would remain open in a lockdown/stay at home order.
Oh thank God!

(37,682 posts)I'm already eating out of my garden: Four different kinds of kale, three different kinds of lettuces, not to mention spinach and arugula.
Scallions. Garlic.
A full complement of herbs: sage, rosemary, tarragon, parsley, thyme, cilantro, and a small pot of basil in the house.
There's probably more but I can't think of it all.
On edit: also shallots, chives, and the most beautiful, full-size leeks.
I have a full pot of celery I was able to over winter in my greenhouse.

(16,303 posts)I have tomato seedlings just popping but even with Wall O Water jackets early May is my planned planting time. We bounced off a low of 18 just last week so lettuce isnt safe to plant yet.
I use lights in the basement until then.

(1,044 posts)Overwintered with only a light frost cover. The curly kale and three baseball size heads of broccoli in deck pots look awesome. Kale tastes great. Letting the broccoli grow a little more before they become lunch. Checked the two raised beds I planted late last summer, enjoyed all fall and winter, and covered when it got cold. OMG the self seeded arugula looks incredible. Leaf lettuce is a little weary looking but there is salad there. Ditto the scallions. So glad I have had these all fall and winter. Currently waaay to wet to plant - we hit the 2 inch mark today on already overly saturated ground. I know I will fondly look back at all of this rain come the hot drought months of mid to late summer, but right a little less rain and more sunshine would be nice. We gardeners are never satisfied 😊
Started all of my transplant seeds today and yesterday. Understand supplies are hard to come by and some stores are limiting 4 seed packets per family. Think there are a lot of people attempting to start seeds this year.

(15,194 posts)I just ordered a bunch of flower seeds for the cottage garden on the assumption that garden centers would not be open. Fortunately, I have a good variety of established perennials.
