I HATE fireworks.

I just took my dog out for his mid-day walk, and when we were 3 blocks away, someone started shooting off fireworks. My dog got panicky and dragged me home. He was basically cheated out of his walk.

I hate fireworks to begin with. I am headache prone and the noise does not agree with me. So I have to barricade myself at home with windows closed and plug my ears on the 4th. And I don't live anywhere near the official celebrations. Its the residents of my neighborhood.

In Wisconsin, any idiot can buy fireworks and set them off any time, any where. In a residential neighborhood. Next to an apartment complex. Near a shopping center where someone might think they are gunshots. And instead of setting them off on the evening of 4th of July, which is appropriate, they are set off at all times of day, even when you least expect it. For a week or two before the 4th and for 2-3 weeks after.

These are explosives. Every year somebody loses an eye or a hand because they don't know what they are doing. But it doesn't seem to stop people from doing it.

I have a thundershirt which helps my dog stay calm at home. Do I have to make him wear it for 6 weeks, everywhere we go, to get through this?

I see the complaints of pet owners everywhere about this. But nothing changes. The economy must not be too bad if people can afford to burn their money up making noise.

put on the show, in a park or other open, public area. I don't love them in neighborhoods where inconsiderate and often drunk assholes set them off in back yards next to homes where there are pets, babies, vets with PTSD and others who are frightened or disturbed by them.

In our town it's illegal to set them off, although the other day I saw a tent set up to sell them. We are about three miles away from the Marshall Fire burn area and it's quite dry right now. How stupid is that!

All fireworks have been banned in Portland, Oregon, but that has very little affect on the adolescent losers shooting them. Last year, three young people were killed in a fire attributed to fireworks. In addition to the effect on our pets, they are awful for people with PTSD, wildlife and the environment. Our fire danger is not so bad right now, but we've had recent fires in our forests that were started with fireworks. Please go to view the professional fireworks in your town or city, and find a better way to "celebrate".

I have a bit larger Maltese female and she is not bothered by fireworks at all.

who ran into the garage to hide from fireworks.

Today I have a cat, Ember, who is not afraid, but who goes on full alert when fireworks start. The city's official site is a mile away, but we can hear the muffled booms even with the windows closed. Since a cat's hearing is superior to a human's, they seem even louder to Ember.

My living room window has a clear view of the sky above the fireworks site. As soon as Ember hears the booms, she leaps onto the window sill and searches for the source. When the starbursts shoot into the sky, she is convinced that we are under attack by colorful sky monsters and begins to growl. She stays on alert at her post, defending our building and neighborhood with warning growls throughout the whole program.

I am sure that she believes that she has successfully kept the monsters away for yet another year after the noise and displays stop. She looks so proud of herself when it's over and she jumps back down to the floor.

Guess I am pretty safe with a guard cat who has my back against outside threats.
